The 2021/22 season will go down in Brentford history for a number of reasons. It was Brentford’s first-ever in the Premier League and only their sixth in the top flight of English football. In terms of finishing position, it was the Club’s fourth best ever.

Brentford’s previous promotion to the top flight came in 1935. The Bees won the old Second Division to clinch Division One status and had four years at that level before the outbreak of World War II. Football resumed for the 1946/47 season and The Bees were relegated.

It took 74 years for The Bees to have another season, their sixth in the top flight. The first Premier League season saw The Bees end in 13th in the table. Let’s have a look at the other top flight seasons.

1935/36 – 46 points – Brentford finish fifth in Division OneThis is Brentford’s highest ever finish. The Bees lost only twice after Christmas Day and only once after New Year’s Day to surge up the table. Under two-points for a win, Sunderland won the title by eight points. Brentford finished two points behind second-placed Derby County

1936/37 – 46 points – Brentford finish sixth in Division OneThe following season was Brentford’s second highest ever finish. They finished a place lower but won more games and had the same number of points. The Bees were in the upper echelons of the table for most of the campaign but lost four of their last six and only won two of their final nine matches.

1937/38 – 45 points – Brentford finish sixth in Division OneThis was our third highest finish but for much of the campaign promised to be the best ever. The Bees were top of the table for four-and-a-half months but won only four of their last 16 matches to slip down the standings. Brentford finished seven points behind Arsenal, who won the league, as close as they ever came, in points terms.

1938/39 – 36 points – Brentford finish 18th in Division One (pictured above)Brentford had a poor start and a poor end to the campaign and finish four points clear of the relegation zone. The following season was halted due to the outbreak of war. Brentford won the London War Cup in 1942 but were weaker when league football resumed.

1946/47 – 25 points – Brentford finish 21st in Division OneThe Bees were relegated from the top flight and it took them 74 years to return. They started with four wins in five but only won nine matches all season. Despite relegation, this still ranks as Brentford’s sixth highest finish.
