Brentford Under-18s have bowed out of the FA Youth Cup following a 5-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur Under-18s at Wheatsheaf Park.
Playing in front of fans at Wheatsheaf Park for the first time, the young Bees went 2-0 down early in the second half, however an Iwan Morgan header gave the side belief of a win.
A talented Tottenham side finished off the game strongly, however, advancing to the fourth round of the competition.
Tony Yogane, Isaac Holland, Morgan and Brentford Community Trust keeper Sammie Saward were added to Lydia Bedford's squad following their 2-2 draw with Northampton Town last Friday night.
The visitors had the best chance of the opening 15 minutes, Kieran Morgan’s strike from the edge of the box deflecting off multiple Brentford defenders and flying over the bar.
Despite Tottenham controlling most of the possession through the early stages, the young Bees weren’t deterred, stringing together a handful of promising attacking moves that put the visitors defenders under pressure.
Brentford keeper Evan Anderson faced his first test of the contest on 17 minutes, Ellis Lehane winning the ball back for Tottenham and firing a shot on goal, the young Bees rising star deflecting the ball away to his left.
As both sides looked for an opening goal it was Tottenham who enjoyed an attacking period through the middle of the first half, however Brentford continued to defend vigorously. Despite the young Bees efforts, a powerful strike from Tyrese Hall couldn’t be stopped by Anderson, his shot from just outside the box finding the top right corner on 32 minutes to hand the visitors a 1-0 lead.
His teammate Yusuf Akhamrich nearly followed suit minutes later, winning the ball back and pushing into a scoring position, however his shot went wide left.
As the break neared, Brentford turned the momentum and began to lock the ball in their attacking half as they searched for an equaliser. Yogane continually found space down the left side, his B team minutes this season proving vital as he crossed the ball into dangerous positions in the box.
The best chance of the half for the home side came in added time, Yogane beating his man and finding an open Holland in the box, who couldn’t finish off the attack as his shot went left of the goal and out of play.
Brentford carried their promising form into the second half, as both sides enjoyed attacking plays to start the second 45 minutes.
The young Bees had the best shot of the opening minutes of the second half, Remy Bennison breaking down the left side and firing a shot at Tottenham keeper Carey Bloedorn who deflected the ball away to Adam Poliakov, but his shot went high and wide.
Tottenham went one better on 59 minutes, Akhamrich making up for his earlier miss and finding the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The young Bees were quick to respond, however, Bennison again breaking down the left side and crossing into Morgan, who jumped clear of his opponent to head the ball past Bloedorn and make it 2-1.
Bennison was handed his second yellow card minutes later and was forced to leave the pitch, a big loss for the young Bees after his impressive play across the opening 65 minutes.
Brentford continued to defend strongly, however a strong strike from Morgan managed to beat Anderson and give the visitors a 3-1 lead inside the final 30 minutes.
The fresh legs of Andre Grey and Freddie Taylor assisted the young Bees as they continued to look for a second goal despite being down to 10 players.
Their defence continued to hold up, however goals to Damola Ajayi and Callum Olusesi handed Tottenham goals four and five and advanced the visitors to the next round of the FA Youth Cup.
