Rob Guest, Tottenham Hotspur reporter for football.london, has highlighted fit-again midfielder James Maddison as a player that Brentford must be wary of on Wednesday night.

Maddison, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury since early November, has eight goal contributions (3G, 5A) in 11 Premier League appearances this season.

Tottenham Hotspur were top of the Premier League for a spell in October after an excellent start, comprising of eight wins and two draws in their first 10 games, but went more than a month without a win after that and now sit fifth after 21 games. What have you made of their campaign to date?

They have been brilliant so far this season and, if those injuries in November to James Maddison and Micky van de Ven had not happened - or Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Yves Bissouma had not been suspended - I think Spurs would be sitting higher in the Premier League table.

Even in the games they lost, such as Aston Villa in November, they played really well and should have been winning by a decent scoreline at half-time.

Given the amount of injuries they have had, they have reacted really well in December and January and I think they are only going to get stronger in what remains of the season when everyone comes back.

In your opinion, are they still in contention for the title?

Ange Postecoglou was asked this question a couple of weeks ago and he basically said they are in title contention. Let’s be honest, Spurs are eight points off top and they do not have any European commitments like Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City.

As I said, Spurs are only going to get stronger once the injured players and those on international duty come back and, once the new signings bed in, they can go up another couple of gears. I think they are in title contention but will probably not have enough in them to go all the way this season.

A top-three finish is very possible, though, which will give them a really good springboard for next season.

Including younger players, nine have left on loan in January, while Hugo Lloris’ 11-year spell came to an end, Timo Werner joined on loan and Radu Dragusin came in from Genoa for a figure around £27 million. It looks as though it’s been a positive month in that respect – would you agree?

Very much so. Spurs are usually late movers in the transfer market and in the past couple of January windows, it has been the final day or the day before when the signings have actually come in.

Given the injuries and what they did not do in the summer transfer window, they always knew what they had to do in January and they knew they had to do it right away. Credit to the club, they have managed to do that.

The loan signing of Timo Werner is shrewd, as he is someone who knows the league and maybe did not have the best of spells at Chelsea, but will have learned from that experience and that can only help Spurs.

Radu Drăgușin is one of the most highly rated defenders in Europe and has made quite a name for himself in Serie A, so Spurs have obviously seen something in him. A lot of clubs have stood still in the market, which is perhaps understandable, Spurs have just gone all out and made the signings they needed to.

Which player should Brentford fans keep an eye on at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

I would probably say James Maddison, as I reckon he will probably be back for that game.

Rodrigo Bentancur came back ahead of schedule, as did Romero, so Maddison could quite easily be named in the starting XI. He really makes Tottenham tick.

Spurs have played well in Maddison’s absence, but not as well as they did with him. He has missed so much football over the past two months and will be looking to make up for lost time.

Elsewhere, Richarlison is in a decent run of form in front of goal at the moment, Bentancur is starting to get back to his best and Dejan Kulusevski has had a big impact in the final third, so there are actually a number of players Brentford need to keep an eye on.

How is Postecoglou likely to set up his side in north London?

It is usually a 4-3-3 and the defence pretty much picks itself, with Vicario in goal behind Porro, Romero, Van de Ven and Udogie. Porro and Udogie like coming forward and helping out with the attack; they move into central areas, so that is something Brentford will have to be wary of.

In midfield, Bentancur will be pulling the strings and you would like to think it would be Maddison and another – Oliver Skipp or Kulusevski – looking to influence things further forward.

In attack, it will be Richarlison through the middle and then two of Werner, Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson out wide.

What’s your score prediction for this one?

Spurs are in good form at the moment, though they will have to keep an eye out for Ivan Toney now he is back, so I will back them to win 2-0.
