Two stoppage-time strikes from Darwin Núñez scuppered Brentford's hopes of taking points off league leaders Liverpool last weekend, but Thomas Frank felt his side performed well against "probably the best team in the Premier League, if not the world".

Although Arne Slot's side forced the hosts onto the back foot for extended periods, Frank's men also fashioned good chances of their own, particularly after the break, and on another day both Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa could have added to their respective goal tallies this term.

In fact, Liverpool keeper Alisson (7) had to make more saves than any other keeper in the top flight during Matchweek 22 at Gtech Community Stadium.

There were strong showings all over the park for the Bees, with defender Sepp van den Berg shining alongside Nathan Collins in the middle of the west Londoners' back four as he took on his former club - the Dutchman finishing the contest with more tackles won (5) than any player on the pitch.

Van den Berg's arrival in the summer has bolstered Brentford defensively, and another strong performance from his young team-mate Yehor Yarmoliuk bodes well for the Bees in midfield.

Dynamic in and out of possession, Yarmoliuk competed well against Liverpool's classy midfield trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai and the Ukrainian's stats on Saturday highlighted his all-round ability.

Ranking sixth among Brentford players for touches taken against the Reds, with 43, the 20-year-old's energy and mobility was on show all afternoon against Liverpool, and he attempted two shots during the course of the contest while also completing two successful dribbles (no Bees player managed more). His ability to spread the play was also underlined by four accurate long balls.

Defensively speaking, Yarmoliuk also contributed to the cause, the youngster winning two tackles and weighing in with three clearances.

Lauded by his head coach Frank after a fantastic display against Newcastle back in December, Yarmoliuk has since impressed in full Premier League games against both Arsenal and Liverpool, and the midfielder appears to have a very bright future.

Although Yarmoliuk's promising display deserves special mention, Brentford’s midfield competed well all game, and the ever-reliable Christian Nørgaard enjoyed another excellent afternoon against Liverpool.

The Danish midfielder was fantastic in possession, completing 95 per cent of his passes against the Reds, and he also made four interceptions, twice as many as any other player on the pitch.

Playing regularly and with the likes of Nørgaard, Mathias Jensen, Vitaly Janelt and Mikkel Damsgaard to learn from, Yarmoliuk is evolving fast - and his rapid development will give his head coach the right kind of selection headaches.
