Brentford B made it two consecutive wins in the Premier League Cup as they beat Aston Villa Under-21s 3-1 away from home on Wednesday evening.
Two goals from captain Alex Gilbert and one from Kyreece Lisbie earned the side all three points as they sit top of Group D.
The young Bees went into the match following a positive run of form having netted five times in their last two matches with Crewe Alexandra and Hearts.
It was almost the perfect start when a great chance fell inside three minutes when Val Adedokun worked the ball well on the left before he crossed for Gilbert, who had a free header, but he could only head at the Villa keeper.
As the half developed it was the home side who saw more of the ball, and they worked some chances with a few efforts from distance which Matt Cox had to be equal to. Just a minute after Gilbert’s header, Seb Revan shot wide of goal before Cameron Archer shot powerfully, but for a good block from Edon Pruti.
A header from Tommi O’Reilly then went over at the near post from Revan’s cross before Todd Alcock fired over from a close-range free-kick as the home side looked to make the most of their early possession.
As it got to the 30-minute mark the Bees began to show their threat on the counter as Trevitt went close. The 19-year-old picked the ball up from deep before charging forwards and beating a few of the Villa defenders as they raced back. He pulled the trigger from the edge of the box but James Wright parried the ball away in the Villa goal.
Six minutes later the Bees had the lead and it came in style. Wonderful front-foot defending from Tristan Crama saw the Frenchman intercept before driving forwards and curling from deep. The ball was initially aimed at Trevitt, and it took a touch off the Brentford number 11, before it fell to Gilbert at the far post to hammer home.
It might have been 2-0 at the break when Trevitt tried his luck again but another powerful attempt from the edge of the area saw Wright equal to it.
Half-time: Aston Villa U21 0 Brentford B 1
The second half started in a similar way to the first with the home side comfortable in possession but the likes of Pruti, Nico Jones and Crama were equal to every ball in the box.
Two minutes before the hour it became 2-0 when Gilbert benefited from an error as a long ball forward wasn’t dealt with and the young forward managed to round the keeper and slot home with precision before the defenders could clear.
On 67 minutes Charlie Farr, who made his return to Bodymoor Heath where he spent many years coming through the academy, almost made it 3-0 when Gilbert broke forward and played in Yehor Yarmoliuk. The Ukrainian then played the ball back for Farr but his curled effort was just wide of goal.
On 82 minutes the home side did get their goal and it came when Tommi O’Reilly found some space just inside the box. He whipped an impressive effort which beat Cox for power and ended up in the top corner.
Though it could have been a nervy ending in front of 305 spectators at Bodymoor Heath, the Bees kept their cool and managed to restore their two-goal cushion when substitute Max Dickov found Kyreece Lisbie down the right. The youngster drove forwards and fired a low effort into the bottom corner.
