Brentford B progressed to the Third Round of the Middlesex Senior Cup with a 5-2 win over Bedfont Sports on Wednesday evening.

Kyreece Lisbie grabbed Brentford’s first to level things after they fell behind early on before Isaac Holland made it 2-1 before the break. Three second half goals from Michael Olakigbe, Roy Syla and Nico Jones took the game away from the non-league side as the young group once again impressed.

B Team Head Coach Neil MacFarlane named a very youthful side as there were starts for the likes of Byron Wilson, Isaac Holland and Tony Yogane, whilst there was also a first start for Olakigbe as he added more minutes after making his comeback from injury.

The Bees threatened early on when Olakigbe combined well down the left-hand side with defender Val Adedokun before the ball was played centrally into the path of Yogane on the edge of the box. The youngster hit with power but fired over moments before he saw another effort, this time from close range, well blocked.

Roy Syla

On four minutes the game had its first goal when a ball forward centrally skipped past Pruti for Sam Evans to run on to. The forward composed himself before firing in with his right foot past the onrushing Roco Rees.

Brentford had much of the possession in the opening 20 minutes without creating too many clear cut chances, with one of the first real attempts coming as Adedokun crossed from the left. He found the head of Pruti but he was unable to guide his header on target.

On 30 minutes another brilliant chance fell for the Bees as Syla floated a brilliant ball from the centre out to Lisbie. The forward held his run and connected well with a header but it was straight at the Bedfont keeper.

10 minutes later Brentford had their equaliser, and it came when Lisbie was found out on the left. As Olakigbe made a darting run into the middle his floated effort caught the keeper out as the ball found its way into the net.

Moments before the break the B Team had their lead and it came through some good play. A positive ball into the path of Holland from Nico Jones found the young winger. He looked to play the ball first time across goal before it was blocked. The ball then came back to the winger before he curled home low to make it 2-1.

The second period was less than 10 minutes old when Olakigbe got his goal. After the ball was fired goalwards from the edge of the box from Lisbie, the keeper palmed the ball into the path of the Brentford number seven who slotted home with composure.

Alex Gilbert

The second half didn’t all go the way of Brentford, though, as just before the hour the home side hit back when Tayshan Hayden-Smith struck from the centre of the area and his powerful effort looked to take a deflection off of a Brentford defender which took the ball past Rees in goal.

More chances came for the Bees as they looked to make their dominance in possession count. Substitute Max Dickov did well down the right as he played the ball forward into the path of Holland, who squared for Gilbert, but for a smart save to deny the forward player, who entered the field for the final 30 minutes or so having been on the bench for Thomas Frank’s side on Tuesday evening in the Carabao Cup.

15 minutes from time Gilbert had another opportunity but this time from the penalty spot. After Yogane was fouled, Gilbert struck his penalty low and forced the Bedfont keeper into a smart save. Thankfully for the Bees, though, Roy Syla was on hand to slide home the rebound and get his first goal for the Club since he returned last month.

A couple of minutes later Nico Jones got himself on the scoresheet when he thumped home with a header following a Brentford corner to make it 5-2 as the side safely progressed to the Third Round of the competition.
