Brentford completed a Sky Bet Championship double over Sheffield Wednesday with a well-deserved 3-0 win. Bryan Mbeumo put The Bees in front in a first half that was pretty even but saw the hosts have the better chances. Brentford had complete control after the break and goals from Saman Ghoddos and Mads Bech Sørensen sealed the win.

The 3-0 score line does not indicate how close the game was for long periods. A first half of few chances ended with The Bees in front as Mbeumo finished off after a long throw and as the contest opened up, Brentford took control. They never really looked like losing their lead after the break, but it took until the last 15 minutes for them to turn that control in to chances and seal the win.

It was a scrappy opening to the game, albeit with a couple of openings at either end. Sergi Canós had a shot blocked for The Bees after cutting in off the left flank before a clever lofted pass by Ghoddos released Mbeumo in the inside left channel, he met the dropping ball on the volley but fired well wide. The visitors had an opening when Kadeem Harris got on to a loose ball in midfield and found Barry Bannan. The shot from 25 yards dipped in front of David Raya but was pushed around the post. The resulting corner was played deep and met by Tom Lees, but he headed wide.

Despite the attempts at either end, the first quarter of the contest did not really look like producing a goal. Both teams were quite narrow, playing three in the centre of midfield while the visitors also had a trio of central defenders. The Bees had a lot of possession but mostly in their own half and they did not make much impact against the Wednesday defence. The visitors looked to get their wing backs in to the game. They tried to isolate Harris against Sørensen, playing left back for Brentford, but were often forced to play long and gave the ball back to the hosts.

The only goal of the first half came just past the midway point, and it was a goal that summed up the game. Sørensen propelled a long throw in to the penalty area from the left and Wednesday failed to win the first ball. Winston Reid challenged for it and then Henrik Dalsgaard did likewise, giving Canós aa chance to shoot. The shot was flying wide but Mbeumo was alert to it and managed to get a touch to divert it in to the corner of the net.

And that was how it stayed until the break. The visitors did not alter their outlook much, content to hold a solid defence and attack on the flanks when they could. It took a vital clearance from Dalsgaard to prevent Osaze Urhoghide getting in at the far post and on to a Bannan cross from the second phase of a corner, but there was little goal mouth action in the latter stages of the first period.

The second period continued to be played at a relatively sedate pace, but Brentford appeared to have more control of the contest. They were still mostly playing in their own half, but they were able to decide when to inject pace and had a couple of good openings in the early stages of the second half. A throw from Dalsgaard released Canós on the right side and he lashed across the face of goal. There was a better opening soon after when Ghoddos won the ball in Wednesday territory and played a one-two with Dalsgaard. The space was created for a shot from 15 yards, but Ghoddos steered it inches wide of the far post.

The next time Ghoddos got a sight of goal, he made no mistake. Mathias Jensen found space in midfield and fed the ball on to Mbeumo. The next touch put Ghoddos in on the right side of the penalty area and he made no mistake, drilling a shot across Joe Wildsmith and in to the net to give The Bees breathing space.

The goal came when Wednesday were a man down. Substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was off the pitch receiving treatment after he was tripped by Dalsgaard. The Brentford defender was booked but the gap left by Dele-Bashiru was exploited by The Bees for the goal and the Wednesday man was unable to continue. But by the time he was replaced, Brentford were two up.

The Bees had not really been troubled by Wednesday before the second goal. Liam Palmer had driven forward from defence before lashing a shot wide, but they had not been able to create chances. They could have pulled one back when Callum Paterson headed a Matt Penney cross down towards Izzy Brown, but the Wednesday substitute could not apply the finish.

The later stages were generally played with Brentford on the front foot. A superb pass from Ghoddos set Mbeumo away with only Wildsmith to beat. Mbeumo drew the goalkeeper and looked to lift a shot over him and in to the net but Wildsmith stuck up a big hand and kept it out. When Wednesday failed to clear another long throw soon after, Reid got a touch to it and Pinnock met it with a volleyed effort that bounced just wide.

The third goal eventually came with seven minutes remaining. Brentford won a free kick when a Jensen break was halted and Ghoddos lined it up. He bent a cross brilliantly between Wildsmith and his defence and Sørensen was strong enough to get to it first. The header from Sørensen was powerful enough to beat Wildsmith despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it, and it rolled over the line.

It could have been even more for The Bees. Pinnock met a Jensen corner with a header that flew wide in the dying seconds and Brentford spent the later stages on the front foot. A bigger win would probably have been unfair on Wednesday, but The Bees made it six from six against the Yorkshire side after a 2-1 win in the reverse game and ended a run of three straight losses with maximum points.
