Brentford B were beaten for the first time in this season’s Premier League Cup as Blackburn Rovers Under-21s came from behind to claim a 2-1 win at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.
Ryan Trevitt had put Neil MacFarlane’s team 1-0 ahead on 14 minutes but Rovers quickly responded with a double before the half hour mark. The Bees looked to equalise countless times but were unable to find the net as the the Lancashire side claimed the points.
The Bees were able to welcome back Yehor Yarmoliuk to the side after his international exploits with Ukraine Under-19s, where he netted two goals in three games. They also welcomed back defensive duo Nico Jones and Tristan Crama who missed Tuesday’s match against Como 1907.
Brentford started brightly and they worked a good opening on 10 minutes when a precise ball down the left from Jones found the run of Michael Olakigbe. The winger’s cross was aimed towards Alex Gilbert, who made a run in the centre of the box but the low cross was cleared away in the nick of time by Rovers.
Sam Burns had Blackburn’s first attempt when a looping ball over the top found the Blackburn man in behind. He composed himself and shot low but was unable to beat Ben Winterbottom in the Bees’ goal.
The opener came on 14 minutes through Trevitt as he notched his eighth of the season in style. After the ball was played out to the left-hand side, Val Adedokun checked back whilst Trevitt held his run centrally. The ball was squared to him and he made no mistake as he fired past Jordan Eastham.
Ryan Trevitt netted once again for the young Bees
Brentford weren’t ahead for long, though, as nine minutes later Rovers hit back. Eastham helped the side on the counter-attack. The ball found its way to the right-hand side before it was squared into the path of unmarked Ben Fyles who slotted home past Winterbottom to get his first goal of the afternoon.
Five minutes later he had his second and it came in similar circumstances as Rovers countered. A throw from Eastham got Blackburn going forward at pace and this time Fyles’ effort was more tricky but he was able to fire in from the right-hand side of the box to make it 2-1.
The Bees hunted for an equaliser as they tried to level before the break. They could well have done so when Olakigbe shot from the edge of the box but for the keeper whilst Gilbert saw his header from Adedokun’s cross well stopped too. Yarmoliuk and Trevitt had more shots before the half was out as the latter effort went over from the edge of the box following good play down the left from Jones and then Gilbert.
The second half was four minutes old when Brentford fashioned another really good chance. A cross from Trevitt, who was often at the heart of things for the Bees, found Olakigbe at the far post but the 18-year-old was unable to keep his cushioned volley at the far post on target as the ball went behind for a goal kick.
As the game moved towards the 70-minute mark the Bees had perhaps their best chance to go level and it came through substitute Aaron Pressley. The striker, who netted last time out against Como, was found in the box by Gilbert who crossed from the right. He controlled before shooting from close range but, under pressure, his shot crashed against the bar. Trevitt then tried to help the ball across the line but for a good defensive block from Blackburn.
More chances came for Gilbert when substitute Max Dickov’s cross was spilt by the keeper but the defenders managed to get the ball away from danger before the Brentford captain could connect. He was then played in behind as he beat the offside trap four minutes from time but, after being found by Pressley, his shot was saved low by Eastham. The match leaves the side on nine points in the group after four matches and they will face Aston Villa in the next game in the competition on 12 December at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.
