Alex Gilbert says the B team will need to maintain their composure and mindset as they now turn their attentions to a Premier League Cup Semi-Final.

The captain sealed the side’s place in the last four with a late penalty to beat Arsenal Under-21s on Monday night in what was a memorable occasion for our young side.

Reacting to netting the winner, Alex said: “I’m absolutely buzzing! Any goal in added time you’re absolutely delighted for. To have a penalty adds even more pressure because they are trying to put you off. It felt like forever before the ref blew the whistle but I kept my composure and put it away. Hopefully all those experiences that I’ve had in the past have led to me scoring it. You try and keep as much out of your head as you can and you try to think positively. Don’t let anything effect you, people saying stuff behind you, but you have to get into your own zone. I’ve taken quite a lot of penalties now. I’ve missed some and scored some so I’ve got a bit of experience of taking them so I like to think I know what I’m doing.

“On paper Arsenal were probably the biggest team left in the competition so it’s about not getting complacent and thinking we’ve done it. We need to keep our heads down, keep composed and get ready for the next one.”

Brentford B created a host of chances particularly in the first half of the match with Gilbert himself going close on the stroke of half-time but for a good save from the Arsenal keeper. The youngster felt the side very much deserved the win and was also keen to praise the defence for their clean sheet.

He continued: “We had so many chances in the first half and I’m not sure if they had a shot on target. It’s credit to the lads and the training. Neil (MacFarlane), Saunds (Sam Saunders) and Purds (James Purdue) and all the staff. The position that the lads are in, I feel that we can go all the way and win this.

“We knew they’d have good players and we have great players ourselves but I feel the spirit in our team, we’re all so close. We all go out with each other and we’re friends on and off the pitch so that shows in the game and we all dig in for each other and go that extra yard. That’s what’s won it.

“The lads at the back give us so much confidence that we can keep creating chances and a goal will come. We have so much belief in the guys back there, they’ve been solid all season.”

As captain of the side the forward player was keen to praise the whole squad and says he’s proud to have led the team this far in the competition.

He said: “I’m chuffed to pieces with all of them. All the new lads, Aaron Hickey came down from the first team to watch tonight, and that just boosts morale for everyone watching. To look at the sidelines and see all your teammates, lads who weren’t in the squad and are maybe a bit unhappy. The lads on the bench, everyone, I’m buzzing with everyone.”
