Brentford B were beaten 2-0 by Icelandic champions Breiðablik on Saturday afternoon with two second half goals the difference between the two sides in the Algarve.

The B team are back in Portugal to face two senior sides, the first of which were the Icelandic team who the Bees came up against last year in the Atlantic Cup.

It was our opponents who had the game’s first opening on four minutes when some good interplay on the edge of the box saw the ball squared to Viktor Karl but his side footed effort sailed over Vincent Angelini’s goal.

On 10 minutes the Bees created their first attempt when they won the ball back high through Ryan Trevitt following a Breiðablik throw. The ball was then played wide to Michael Olakigbe put his low powerful drive was blocked well.

A few more moments fell the way of the Icelandic team moving towards the half hour mark as Damir Muminovic powered an effort from a free-kick but it was well blocked by the Brentford wall. Viktor Karl then had another chance when he was on the end of some clever play as he slid to connect well but his effort was kept out well by Angelini. That preceded another good save from the young Scot as he kept out Kristinn Steindórsson’s low drive which was angled towards the bottom left-hand corner.

A golden chance then fell for Brentford as they almost went in front in stunning fashion. As Olakigbe pulled out to the right he crossed into the path of Trevitt who hit a brilliant acrobatic volley which looked destined for the bottom corner but for an excellent save from the keeper. The Bees had the better of the closing minutes in the first half as a Trevitt free-kick looped up among a crowd of bodies but the deflected ball edged just the wrong side of the post.

It took the Icelandic side seven minutes to break the deadlock as a powerful strike was tipped onto the cross bar by Angelini but in the scramble in the aftermath Viktor Karl managed to convert from close range to make it 1-0.

The Bees made a number of changes just before the hour mark and J’Neil Bennett made an instant impact when he won the ball high. He looked to drive inside towards goal but was quickly closed down and his low cross aimed for his teammates was well cut out.

Moments later an Alex Gilbert corner was recycled by Bennett and it found the head of Tristan Crama but he was unable to keep his attempt on target as it edged over. Nico Jones did similar a few minutes later as Brentford searched for a way back into the game but they were unable to really test the opposition keeper frequently enough. They were made to rue those missed opportunities on 73 minutes when substitute Eyþór Aron produced a piece of individual ability as he drove at the Brentford defence and cut in from the left before slotting home into the bottom corner past Roco Rees.

On 81 minutes Brentford had another chance to go level as Olakigbe squared it for Romeo Beckham. The winger attempted to curl an effort from a central position just inside the box but for another strong block from Breiðablik. The side’s last attempt came once again from a set piece as Gilbert delivered a stunning ball from a wide free-kick. The whipped in effort found the head of Crama but his glancing effort went just wide of goal. The B team will now look to their match with IF Elfsborg on Thursday next week.
