Brentford B claimed their first Premier League Cup win of the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Leicester City Under-21s at Wheatsheaf Park.
In front of an 869-strong crowd at the new home of the B team, the young Bees found the back of the net through captain Val Adedokun in the first half and it was enough to secure the three points.
Brentford B head coach Neil MacFarlane made three changes to the side that beat Strasbourg U21s 3-2 last week, with Ji-soo Kim, Benjamin Fredrick and Riley Owen coming into the starting line-up.
As has been the case across the past few weeks, the young Bees starting the game impressively, applying pressure to the visitors’ defenders, causing multiple turnovers and helping Brentford dominate possession throughout the opening 10 minutes.
The young Bees' best chance in the opening stages came through one of last week’s goal scorers in Adedokun, who pounced on a loose ball and sent a powerful strike from outside the box but was well saved and cleared over the bar by Leicester City keeper Arlo Doherty.
Feeling the momentum behind them, the young Bees cranked up their offensive actions, Ethan Brierley finding himself on the end of a Nathan Young-Coombes through ball minutes later, but his shot was well saved. The ball stayed live, however, Brierley regaining possession on the right side and sending a dangerous cross into the box that cleared Tony Yogane’s head and fell to Adedokun, whose half-volley shot flew into the back of the net to make it 1-0 on 18 minutes.
Brentford refused to let up on their attack, Charlie Farr attacking down the right side two minutes later and crossing into Young-Coombes, whose header went just right of the goal.
While their attack was flourishing, it was Brentford's defensive unit of keeper Vincent Angelini, Farr, Adedokun, Charlie Goode, Kim and Fredrick that dominated the ensuing 10 minutes of the game, mitigating any Leicester City move and preventing any shots on target.
Brierley was back in the action on 28 minutes, cruising past one defender and sending a powerful strike to the top right corner, but it was well saved by a diving Doherty.
After a strong Brentford start, the game evened out as the break approached, the young Bees’ final chance on goal coming through Yogane, whose shot off a Romeo Beckham cross was well smothered by Doherty.
It was a tale of two halves for Brentford, as Leicester City came out a new and improved side in the second 45 minutes.
The young Foxes dominated possession for much of the second half and managed to keep the ball inside their attacking half. While spending a lot of their time defending, Brentford didn’t let the dam wall break, the visitors only able to manage limited shots on target.
Angelini was the star of the second half for the young Bees, the keeper keeping out multiple shots that looked to be certain goals. The first came seven minutes into the second half, as Tom Wilson-Brown ran onto the end of a cross and found himself one-on-one with Angelini, who made a vital save to keep Brentford’s lead.
Wanya Marcel was on the attack minutes later for the visitors, beating one defender before his shot flew over the bar.
Leicester City’s best chance came on 61 minutes as Logan Briggs was found in the middle of the box but the substitute put his shot over the bar also.
Brentford continued to defend strongly but it was the young Foxes doing all of the attacking, Ben Nelson pushing hard with possession from the halfway line into the box, but like his teammates, his shot went high.
Fresh legs in the forms of Iwan Morgan, Angel Waruih, Conor McManus, Isaac Holland and Max Dickov came on for the young Bees, but it was still the visitors on the attack. Jayden Joseph was up next to have a shot on goal, but his powerful strike from outside the box was superbly saved by an outstretched Angelini diving to his left.
Despite dominating play, Leicester City couldn’t break through Brentford’s brick wall. A frantic final 10 minutes developed, as the visitors searched for an equaliser, but the young Bees continued to repel their moves to secure three points.
