Iwan Morgan, speaking while in Spain for Brentford B’s Mediterranean Cup campaign, said he’s "really happy" with his development since joining the Bees.
The Welsh youth international shared his thoughts following a three-game tour with the B team as the young side had the chance to test themselves against senior opponents overseas.
Speaking about his time away, Morgan said: “It’s been great. To come to a different country has been really enjoyable and a good time to build bonds with some of the lads, and the facilities have been great as well.”
Neil MacFarlane's side travelled to Spain following their Premier League Cup defeat to Leicester City at the beginning of the month.
Games against Ukrainian Premier League sides FC Kyrvbas and FC Metalist 1925 were followed by a final fixture against Icelandic outfit Stjarnan.
It proved to be a tough test for the young Bees, but Morgan insisted he loved every minute and feels the games programme the B team has to offer will only help his development as the forward eyes first-team football in the coming years.
“If you want to play first-team football it’s good to get used to playing against men,” he said.
“At the end of the day you want to be coming up against big strong defenders because that’s what you need to be ready to face, especially if the opportunity to play at a senior level comes around.
“I think it’s good that I am having these opportunities at a young age; I feel that I’ve learnt a lot coming up against this type of opposition. It’s made me realise you need to use your brain a lot more at this level because you’re facing experienced players.”
The 18-year-old made the move to west London from Swansea City with a big reputation after a 2022/23 season which saw the striker net 28 times for the south Wales club.
Big goals in the Premier League Cup and FA Youth Cup marked Morgan's opening few months as a Bee.
“I’d like to think I’ve done well," Morgan reflected. "I think I settled in pretty quickly despite it being a little different for me as I had to go straight off to Wales for international duty.
"I’ve really enjoyed being a Brentford player so far and the lads were great at integrating me in as part of the group.
“It’s very different from where I came from; the teams that I’m playing now are much stronger and I’m playing in environments I’ve never played in before.
"I’ve still got a lot to do and I want to keep improving. The coaches have been great and I believe with their help I can go really far.
“I’ve loved the games I’ve been able to play in, especially the big ones in the Premier League Cup. I don’t feel like I hide when the pressure is on; I feel responsible to step up and help the team as much as I can.”
Morgan was rewarded for his hard work and strong performances with a new contract, which will see the striker remain at the club until 2027.
The Welshman said he’s over the moon the club have shown their confidence in him but feels he still has plenty more to do if he wants to reach his goal of making his first-team debut.
“I’m grateful to the club for extending my contract," he added.
"I’m really happy with where I am and I couldn’t ask to be at a better club. It’s not time for me to take my foot of the gas now, I’ve got to keep working hard and trying to perform to impress the manager.
“There is always room for improvement. I’m still young and I have plenty of time to develop, so the main things for me are to try and stay on the pitch as much as I can, keep working on the training ground and remain consistent.”
