Kyreece Lisbie made a long-awaited return to action for Brentford B during their tour of Monaco and Nice.
The forward had been sidelined for seven months having injured his knee in March in a Middlesex Senior Cup clash against Hayes and Yeading. After several MRI scans, it was discovered that the injury was patellar tendinopathy which was caused by tears in the knee tendon.
Speaking about his time away from the pitch, Lisbie explained: “It’s been so tough, I’m not a fan of the gym and I’ve been stuck in there for the past seven months, so it’s been extremely mentally challenging for me.
“I had a lot of time to think about my game and where I can improve, so in some respects I think it’s helped me and made me more mentally strong.
"I’m really thankful to the coaches, the players and of course the medical staff for being with me on the journey back to the pitch.”
The 20-year-old worked tirelessly to regain fitness and after seven long months, Lisbie was finally able to step foot on the grass at Jersey Road once again.
Just a few days away from returning for the B team at the beginning of the 2023/24 season, Lisbie unfortunately picked up another injury which forced the forward to return to the medical room for another month.
“For me, that was the hardest part; just as I thought I was able to get back out there I was hit with another setback,” said Lisbie.
“It was almost like a cycle of injuries. To be back out on the grass and then to get injured again was heartbreaking.
“I knew I was close, I couldn’t let another setback get to me and as it was only bone bruising I knew soon enough I’d be back doing what I love.”
As the B team travelled to the French Riviera to face Monaco and Nice’s Groupe Elite sides, Lisbie’s much-anticipated comeback was on the horizon.
With MacFarlane’s side three goals down against Monaco, Lisbie was introduced to the game on 70 minutes and it wasn’t long until the youngster made an impact.
After collecting the ball on the right flank, Lisbie showed excellent skill to flick the ball through the legs of the oncoming Monaco defender before driving forward into the box and finding Ashley Hay with a brilliant cut-back pass.
Hay finished the move with a nice shot which found the bottom corner, earning Lisbie an assist on his return to the side.
“It had been such a long time out, I just wanted to express myself with the assist," he said.
"I noticed before receiving the ball there was space behind me so I drove forward and knew Ash would be on for the cutback."
Following his arrival to Brentford B back in July 2022, Lisbie got off to an excellent start and proved to be a key figure in attack for Neil MacFarlane’s side during the opening months of last season.
Lisbie went on to discuss how he plans to regain that form and earn a starting spot following his return from injury.
He said: “I had a positive last season but that’s out the way now, we have six months left to have a good campaign as a team and that’s what my focus is on now.
“I feel ready, and my body feels good so I’m hoping I can kick on now have a good second half of the season and focus on helping the team win games and continuing to get better as a player myself.”
