Ryan Trevitt netted twice as Brentford B were held to a 2-2 draw by Luton Town Under-21s at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday evening.

Torrential conditions under the lights in Bedfordshire made for an entertaining encounter with both sides fielding players from their first teams.

Neil MacFarlane was able to call upon five players from Thomas Frank’s first team squad with senior players Saman Ghoddos and Shandon Baptiste in midfield whilst three former B team players in Matt Cox, Fin Stevens and Mads Roerslev were also able to build valuable minutes.

Alex Gilbert, Ryan Trevitt and Daniel Oyegoke returned to the side after they missed the B team’s last match in the Middlesex Senior Cup at Hayes & Yeading.

It was a controlled start for the Bees, who saw a lot of the early possession, and they created a good chance after just five minutes when Baptiste received the ball on the edge of the area before clipping into Michael Olakigbe before the Luton defenders got back to clear the danger. The ball eventually fell to Ghoddos but his right footed shot towards the bottom right-hand corner was well saved by Jack Walton.

The Luton keeper was called into action once again on 12 minutes when a great forward pass from Tristan Crama found the run of Trevitt and he drove forward before playing in captain Gilbert but his powerful effort was well stopped.

Brentford were able to make their early dominance pay on 28 minutes when they went ahead with the first of a quickfire double from Trevitt. A great through ball from Oyegoke found the midfielder in space and he composed himself well as he drove in on goal before sweeping into the bottom left-hand corner.

The spell of dominance then saw the Bees double their advantage just five minutes later. Trevitt was found inside the area before working himself some space and chipping expertly over Walton to make it 2-0.

The Bees raced to a 2-0 lead in Luton

Nathan Young-Coombes could well have had a goal shortly before the break when a free-kick came into the box before Bapsiste then flicked an effort goalwards into the path of the striker but he forced Walton into another save.

Luton then gave themselves a real incentive going into the second half as they pulled a goal back just before half-time after a good cross into the box from Joe Johnson was played back across goal for Joe Taylor to slot in from close range to make it 2-1.

The Bees started brightly in the second period and Olakigbe created a good opening on the left when he drove forward before slotting the ball inside for Trevitt who then found Stevens but his effort from just inside the box was curled over.

The second period was eight minutes old when Luton levelled and it came through one of their first team players in Luke Freeman. After receiving the ball inside the box the Town man managed to curl home past Cox with his left foot.

Another chance came for the Bees shortly after and once again for Young-Coombes when Trevitt maintained his threat going forwards before he slid the ball inside for the B team striker who had to slide to connect but he could only poke his effort the wrong side of the post.

Neither side could find a winner in Bedfordshire

Roerslev and Ghoddos were substituted just after the hour mark as they built more minutes in their legs and that preceded another chance for the Hatters when they tested Cox following a counter-attack. Elliot Thorpe broke at speed as he burst forward following a Brentford corner. As he looked to drive into the box and evade the defenders who were rushing back, Cox commanded his area well and made a well-timed challenge before the Luton man could get a clean shot away.

Cox then made a good save from Oli Lynch on 70 minutes before he was once against called into action with four minutes to play but Thorpe’s effort was straight at the Brentford keeper. Substitute J’Neil Bennett then had the game's last real chance as he shot from a tight angle high towards the near post but he was unable to keep his effort on target as the match finished level.
