Charlie Farr netted an equaliser deep into injury-time as Brentford B staged a dramatic late comeback at Wheatsheaf Park against AS Monaco Under-21s.

Saimon Bouabre and Lucas Michal gave the French side a two-goal lead in the early stages of the second half which they held well into the final quarter.

However, Michael Olakigbe swept home with 18 minutes to play before Farr’s angled drive, seven minutes past the 90, took a deflection to wrong foot Alain Zadi and trickle home.

The clash saw Charlie Goode make his return from injury with 45 minutes while Ben Mee, Ivan Toney and Ellery Balcombe also featured from the start.

Brentford B: Balcombe; Farr, Kim, Goode (Owen 46), Mee (Fredrick 58), Adedokun; Brierley, Yarmoliuk (Waruih 58); Olakigbe, Young-Coombes (Laidlaw 90+4), Toney (Yogane 65)

Subs not used: Rose, Hay, Dickov, Beckham, McManus, Zabeli

AS Monaco U21s: Zadi, Babai, Kuzmanovic, Torres, Bakall; Gesan (Platret 81), Baranik; Yacoub (Bamba 85), Bouabre, Michal (Bertolucci 64); Baglieri

Subs not used: Coulibaly, Lienard, Valme, Bery

The opening 45 minutes were lively with both sides moving the ball around crisply on a pristine playing surface.

The returning Goode and Mee, in a three-man backline with Ji-soo Kim, were kept busy by Monaco’s bright front four while Toney was the focal point of Brentford’s attack alongside Nathan Young-Coombes and Olakigbe.

Balcombe made a simple save from Bechir Yacoub’s low shot but more of the early action happened in the direction of the Monaco goal.

Zadi dropped on the ball after it bounced goalwards off Toney while Mee sent a pair of efforts, one with his left foot and one with his head, off target from in-swinging Olakigbe corners.

Yacoub drilled an effort into the side netting at Balcombe’s near post before the away side were given a helping hand in taking the lead.

After Bouabre shot over, the Bees played themselves into trouble from the goal kick, allowing Monaco’s no.10 to pick out the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Balcombe beat away Johnathan Bakali’s long-range shot before Neil MacFarlane’s side enjoyed their best spell of the opening 45 minutes.

A delicious Toney cross just evaded Young-Coombes in the middle while last season’s top scorer also sent a flick header just wide from another Olakigbe set-piece.

In between, Toney was denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty when he was brought down by Louis Torres inside the box. With that decision not given, it was no surprise when the referee waved away a similar incident at the other end when Goode and Yacoub collided in the area.

The away side needed less than a minute of the second half to double their advantage. Again they profited from a quick transition after Brentford gave the ball away on halfway, Michal finding himself free to fire home from 15 yards following a sweeping move.

Riley Owen, who replaced Goode at half-time, saw a shot deflected wide at the back post while Yehor Yarmoliuk, fresh from his first-team debut on Saturday, picked out Mee with an inch-perfect cross – the defender’s header fizzing inches over from eight yards.

Brave Brentford defending then twice denied Bakali, and subsequently Bouabre, as they let fly with efforts from the edge of the box.

Monaco saw this as their chance to put the game to bed and they would have were it not for fine Balcombe saves from Nazim Babai, Dejan Kuzmanovic and Bouabre.

Toney was withdrawn 20 minutes into the second half, his last action to spot Zadi off his line and send an effort from 60 yards inches wide with the keeper well beaten.

Young-Coombes’ shot deflected over from 25 yards but Brentford gave themselves a lifeline with 18 minutes to play.

A hanging cross from the right bounced all the way through to Olakigbe who shifted the ball onto his left foot and rolled back across Zadi into the far corner from 12 yards.

Balcombe’s fine evening continued with a superb fingertip save to turn Sandro Bertolucci’s rising effort over while Babai shot well wide and Bertlocci had a shot blocked by Benjamin Fredrick.

Those missed chances would go on to prove vital as the match went well past the 90-minute mark.

Following a heavy challenge down the right, the ball broke to Tony Yogane on the edge of the box. He fed it inside for Farr to lash goalwards from 12 yards, Kuzmanovic’s deflection taking it past Zadi and in at the near post to complete the late comeback.

MacFarlane delighted with first Wheatsheaf Park match

B-team head coach Neil MacFarlane felt the setting made for a really exciting match against Monaco.

The young Bees have twice headed overseas to play them in recent years and were pleased to welcome the side to Wheatsheaf Park this season.
