The latest Brentford B recruit, Riley Owen, feels he has chosen the right club to continue his development after joining the Bees on a one-year contract with a club option of an additional year.
Riley arrives having previously come through the academy ranks at Arsenal, and most recently Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent five years at the north London club.
The central midfielder featured for the B team in recent pre-season fixtures with the youngster explaining how that period went for the team and why it made his decision to sign for the club an easy one.
“If you look how we try to play as a team, on the ball we are very good,” said Riley. "Neil (MacFarlane) wants us to play from the back and work our way through midfield so the build-up play, and what we are trying to achieve as a side, is very good.
“It 100 per cent made my decision an easier one, I want to get on the ball and affect the games we play from that central midfield role, and the way the coaching staff want us to play helps me do that.”
With the B team group currently out in the south of Spain as part of a five-day tour, which will see the side play two matches against Betis Deportivo Balompié and AC Milan’s youth side, Riley says that the B team programme and the opportunity to test himself against oversees talent is something which excited him when looking at the B team project.
He continued: “I love going on tour. It’s a great experience because you’re playing against top teams so it’s a good taste of the talent in different countries.
“In England, teams play a similar type of style, whereas in Spain you see more class to the players so it’s good to try to adapt to the different experiences.”
The youngster went on to talk about some of his early interactions with B team head coach, MacFarlane, as well as explaining why he decided joining Brentford was the next step in his career and what he feels he can bring to the side as a player.
“He (MacFarlane) said he trusts me on the ball but wants to help me with my work off it, so we have had good conversations. For me personally, I could see a pathway, just by how the team plays and even looking at the first team and seeing how they are progressing as well."
