Brentford Under-21s could not make it two wins on the bounce in the league as a late goal meant that both teams had to settle for a point.
Beaux Booth gave the young Bees the lead after good work from Ashley Hay but a late strike inside the box gave Wigan the leveller which on the balance of play was deserved.
Sam Saunders was in charge of the game in Neil MacFarlane's absence.
The game started positively for the away side as they gained control over the contest, despite a lack of chances for either team.
Chanse Headman did have to make a goal-saving block to deny Reece Greenhalgh from giving Wigan the lead. Despite this, the Bees were the better side in the opening 20 minutes of the game. With four minutes to go until the half-time whistle, Brentford took the lead. Hay’s good work in attack saw him win the ball and feed Booth who had the easy job of finishing into the net for his first goal of the season. The side picked up from where they left off after the break, passing it well and probing the Wigan area. Second-half substitute Ollie Shield had a chance to double the lead as the ball sat up kindly for him following an Isaac Holland cross but he failed to keep his shot down. The home side were getting more joy as the second period progressed, probing the edge of the young Bees’ penalty area with more threat and intent.
The continued pressure was growing and there were a number of last-ditch blocks from Conor McManus and Hanse Headman. With only a couple of minutes to go, Trialist F scored, after cutting onto his right foot and firing low into the bottom corner of the net.
The game would end 1-1 as neither side had any late chances to try and secure a winner. Brentford are in Premier League Cup action next and they will take on Chelsea U21s away from home, at Kingsmeadow on Sunday 15 September, which will be their opener in this year's campaign.
