AS Monaco 2 Brentford B 1- 23 February 2022

Now, you may question as to why a defeat makes it into our season highlights for the B Team, but when you paint the picture, the performance absolutely makes it considering the tough test that was in front of the side in Monaco. 24 hours in the famous sovereign city-state saw the young group come up against a side full of talent which boasted the likes of World Cup winner Cesc Fabregas, as well as German international Kevin Volland, and Russian attacking player Aleksandr Golovin. Not to mention some of the club's rising stars from their youth setup. It was a first half where the side started with composure about them when in possession as they eased themselves into the game against a vastly more experienced opponent. Monaco's opener did arrive, though, and the goal came around the half hour mark in frustrating circumstances for Brentford as they were caught in possession before Maghnes Akliouche fired a powerful drive goal wards, which took a deflection which helped the ball past Rees to make it 1-0. On 40 minutes Brentford got their goal when a Dom Jefferies ball down the right found Young-Coombes, who composed himself before finishing low past the Monaco keeper to net his 25th goal of the season. The winner for Monaco then came in the second period through substitute Eric Ayiah as the winger tricked his way into the box from the left-hand side on 80 minutes, before he powered an effort which beat substitute Ben Winterbottom in goal.

Dartford 0 Brentford B 2- 1 March 2022

Shortly after returning from Monaco, the side turned their attentions to a London Senior Cup Semi-Final against National League South side Dartford. The opponents were on a strong run of form having not been beaten at home all season. The goals came in each half from Ryan Trevitt and Nathan Young-Coombes in what was an incredibly mature performance from Neil MacFarlane’s young side. The win set them up with a clash in the Final of the London Senior Cup.

Brentford B 1 Hampton & Richmond 0- 8 March 2022

The side's positive campaign also saw them reach the Semi-Final of the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup where Bedfont Sports was the setting as the young Bees took on Hampton & Richmond. It was a game that wasn’t littered with chances at either end but the young Bees controlled things throughout as they remained patient in possession. Neil MacFarlane’s side’s best effort of the game came on 79 minutes when good pressing from Myles Peart-Harris and Young-Coombes saw them snatch possession high before the forward drove in on goal and powered an effort towards the top corner, but for a really strong save from the keeper to deny him. On 88 minutes, and with the chance of penalties looking more and more likely, the deadlock was finally broken. A short free-kick was played out to the left for substitute Adedokun, who looked up before curling an effort towards the far post which outwitted the keeper and ended up in the net to secure the side a place in the Final.

Brentford B 1 Hendon FC 1 (Bees win 3-0 on penalties)- 26 April 2022

Having been beaten in the Final of the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup a week or so beforehand, the young Bees had another chance to lift some silverware as they faced Hendon at Dulwich Hamlet's Champion Hill. Both sides traded blows in the first period, and despite Brentford dominating possession, both sides tested each other's goal. Hendon created two chances in quick succession at the start of the second half. The first, a low drive through a crowd of players, was cleared off the line. The second was courtesy of Joe White who directed a cross wide of the post. It was a warning sign for The Bees who found themselves behind on 65 minutes; Kieron Forbes released Clarke who advanced into the area and fired home via the base of the post. Brentford were back on level terms on 79 minutes. Substitute Alex Gilbert drove a free-kick into the Hendon area that was flicked on perfectly by Nico Jones and into the net. Extra-time beckoned and neither were able to get themselves in front so the match was decided by a penalty shootout as a clinical Brentford scored through Ryan Trevitt, Alex Gilbert and Myles Peart-Harris to lift the Cup.
