Brentford FC is represented both on and off the pitch in the Football Black List 2021.The influence of inspirational black role models in the British gamewas highlighted with the release of the 2021 list. Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Bees fan Billy Grant, a long term Season Ticket Holder, were named on the list earlier this week.
The Football Black List, founded in 2008 by sports journalists Leon Mann and Rodney Hinds and published in The Voice newspaper, highlights leaders working across all areas of the game from the Black community. A panel of experts from the football industry and Black community vote independently on nominations made by the public to determine who makes the list. The panel included representation from the Premier League, The Football Association, Professional Footballers’ Association, League Managers Association, English Football League, PGMOL, Sport England, BCOMS and Kick It Out.
The list recognises people across categories including Administration, Community Players and Practitioners. Ivan was named in the Players category and was highlighted for his work raising money and awareness for the people affected by a volcanic eruption on the island of St Vincent, in the Caribbean. He raised almost £30,000 and more can be seen here.
Billy Grant was named in the Community and Grassroots category. Billy is one of the main contributors to the Brentford FC fans network Beesotted. His nomination also recognised his work highlighting issues affecting supporters, particularly black supporters.
Rodney Hinds said: "The quality of nominees and awardees goes from strength to strength. Our community continues to play a major, and increasing role, within football. There is no room for complacency as the sport in terms of inclusivity still has lots of room for improvement. The Football Black List is here to stay and the goals remain; to promote black excellence and diversify the game."
