Brentford secured a 3-2 win over Charlton Athletic in the Professional Development League on Saturday at Hanwell Town.
An Adam Poliakov header took Brentford into the break a goal up only for Charlton to level two minutes into the second half. Ollie Shield struck twice from the penalty spot to help Brentford to a deserved win.
Brentford faced a tough challenge against a Charlton side who sat mid table in the PDL league coming into the game.
The Bees started well with Adam Poliakov looking a threat as he drove forward with the ball from the central midfield position.
With Brentford dominating most of the possession Charlton aimed to hit the hosts on the counter with their speedy wingers.
The first chance of the game came on 20 minutes when Nedved Owusa let fly from outside the box, his strike went inches wide of the far post.
Josh Djoro thought he had put Brentford ahead just after the half hour mark when he made room for a shot on the edge of the Charlton bench, but his effort went over the bar.
Charlton never really troubled the Bees goal in the opening half and had to settle for a few strikes from outside the box, all easily gathered by Evan Anderson.
Brentford took a deserved lead just five minutes before the break through a Poliakov header following a great cross from Ollie Shield.
Charlton came out of the blocks quickly in the second half and got themselves on level terms just two minutes after the break.
Ellis McMillon’s shot from inside the box crept under a diving Anderson to level the game.
Shield was determined to get the young Bees back ahead and ended an excellent run with a powerful shot on 55 minutes but his effort deflected just wide.
Brentford did eventually get themselves back ahead when they were awarded a penalty on 55 minutes after Jack Belton was deemed to have handled the ball inside the box.
Shield slotted his spot kick calmly into the bottom right corner sending the keeper the wrong way.
The hosts were extremely unlucky not to make it 3-1 on 71 minutes when Shield intercepted a poor Charlton pass before driving forward and picking out Poliakov.
The midfielder ran onto the ball and powerfully struck towards goal with his effort coming off the post.
Brentford were awarded another penalty moments after this chance, this time McSorley was chopped down inside the box.
Shield again sent the keeper the wrong way to extend Brentford’s lead.
Charlton kept working for a route back into the game and got themselves a goal back on 81 minutes through an Edward Thomas strike.
Brentford defended well in the final minutes of the game as the side earned all three points.
