Brentford Women put six past Leatherhead Women in an emphatic performance at Bedfont Sports Club on Sunday afternoon.
Brentford went into the break with a healthy 3-1 lead before Sophie Troth added to Chloe Logie and Kirsty Matthews’ penalties ensuring the three points in the London South East Division One North.
The Bees came into the game needing a win if they wanted to remain within the race for the title after dropping two points from last weekend’s league clash against Hackney.
The host’s looked the more dominant side in the early stages of the game with Logie nearly getting in behind the Leatherhead defence on a couple of occasions.
Brentford did get themselves in front inside just 10 minutes after the Leatherhead defender attempted to clear Troth's corner kick but she instead put the ball into her own net.
Matthews put the home side two ahead on 22 minutes following another stunner for the second week running.
The winger cut inside from the right-wing beating Jamie Paige before smashing the ball past Leatherhead’s Chloe Dowellian in emphatic fashion.
The Bees were rampant and looked like they were going to score anytime they began an attack.
Just four minutes after Matthews’ goal, Logie got in on the action after she showed great determination to follow up a Mollie Holmes shot and scoop in the rebound from close range.
Leatherhead struggled to deal with the oncoming Brentford attack and Chloe Dowellian had to stop the away side from going further behind on 32 minutes.
After Matthews peeled off her marker again from the right flank, the number 15 attempted to curl the ball into the top left corner from just outside the box only for her strike to be tipped round the post by the opposition’s goalkeeper.
Logie was a threat throughout
In the final 15 minutes of the first half, Leatherhead began to grow into the game and had a good chance just after the half-hour mark to pull a goal back, but Emily Boycott did well to deny Cassie Brown’s close-range shot.
Brown didn’t let this missed opportunity get to her though as the number 10 scored for her side a minute before the break.
After finding herself in space on the right-wing Brown struck the ball towards goal from 30 yards with her effort beating Boycott, giving Leatherhead a lifeline in the game.
Brentford would have still been the happier side going into the break after controlling the majority of the first half, however Leatherhead came out of half-time beaming with confidence following their goal.
Just three minutes after the break the away team were awarded a free kick on the left flank just outside the box.
Meghan Button’s set piece caught Boycott off guard as she shot towards the near post rather than crossing the ball, the Brentford number one was able to stop the first effort but Clair Ulmal was there to tap the rebound into an empty net.
Despite Leatherhead seeming to have got themselves back in the game Brentford looked like the side which possessed the most quality and it didn’t take them long to create more breathing space from the opposition.
Holmes put in a captain's performance
Matthews looked dangerous all day and on the hour mark she was brought down inside the box by a late Amelia Bruen tackle.
The referee was left with no choice but to point to the spot and Matthews stepped up and confidently placed the ball into the bottom right corner, getting her second of the day.
The Bees were awarded another penalty shortly after, this time it was Logie who was brought down following another late tackle.
The top scorer stepped up this time and tucked her spot kick into the right corner similar to Matthews to extend her side’s lead.
Leatherhead still showed they shouldn’t be counted out as they still looked threatening in attacking areas.
Boycott was forced into making a brilliant save following a strike from Eva Keen which flew towards goal forcing the Brentford number one to tip the ball over the bar.
Just before the full-time whistle, the home team got their sixth, this time it was Sophie Troth with her third of the season.
The attacking midfielder found herself in space between the Leatherhead midfield and defence and decided to shoot, her effort sneaked in at the near post, wrapping up a perfect day for the Bees.
Karleigh Osborne’s thoughts
Speaking after the win, head coach Karleigh Osborne said: “It was a really good performance from us, I think we dominated and took control of the game.
“Our shape and press were really good and we forced them into a lot of errors so I was super pleased from what I saw today.”
Brentford put the visitors under pressure right from the off with Osborne pointing to this as one of the things that impressed him the most.
“It was important (to get off to a quick start) I think we set the tone in our shape and our press from minute one, Leatherhead are a good team with good players who wanted to try and play so we needed to stop that, which we did.
“We caused them problems and once we got our first goal they started to roll in but at the same time I think we could have got more.”
Despite Leatherhead scoring minutes before and after the break, Osborne was pleased with how his team were able to remain composed.
“Their goals shifted the momentum and I think it took us a few minutes to settle ourselves down but once we did that we showed the class we have.
“There was a really good focus from the team today, the warm-up was good and we started the game well, we didn’t start the second half that well but the reaction was good.
The win sets up Osborne’s side nicely for next weekend’s Capital Cup semi-final fixture against Denham United, with the head coach feeling confident ahead of the clash.
“It’s a massive semi-final game so we need to take all the positives from today’s match and make sure we push forward and get off to an early start again.
“We need to be ruthless in both boxes making sure we’re putting the ball in the back of the net and making sure we’re defending for our lives.
