Brentford Women’s B team got back to winning ways after a first half volley from Holly Hawkes ensured the 1-0 win over Luton Town Ladies Reserves at Bedfont Sports Club on Sunday afternoon.
Brentford dominated the chances throughout the game in what was a much changed starting eleven and were able to secure the win through an excellent strike from Hawkes in the opening half.
The women’s B team made a positive beginning to the match and in the opening 10 minutes, the Bees could have led twice.
The best of the two opportunities fell to Hawkes when Clifford found her with a ball over the top of the Luton defence but the forward’s effort on goal didn’t trouble the visitor’s keeper.
The Bees were causing the away side’s defence problems with the long ball and on 20 minutes Hannah Quinton came close as she got onto the end of a pass brilliantly but her shot went just wide of the post.
After large amounts of pressure, the home side did eventually get their deserved goal just after the half hour mark when a Brentford corner was cleared into the path of Hawkes who struck the ball perfectly on the volley with her shot flying into the bottom corner.
Hawkes scored the only goal of the game
The B team went into the break comfortably on top with Luton not causing any real problems in the attacking areas of the pitch.
The second half proved to be more of the same despite head coach Tommy Ryan-Maynard making a number of changes to his side.
The arrivals of Cheyenne Faulkner and Abi Claringbold made a positive impact on the game as the Bees search for more goals.
Aleksandra Dzikowska was a threat on the left flank all afternoon for Brentford and had the beating of the Luton right-back on a number of occasions.
The game was played at a slower tempo than the first half as the women’s B team looked comfortable in possession with Luton posing little threat.
Ryan-Maynard’s side comfortably cruised to victory and now have their eyes set on their final game of the season on Wednesday night as they face league champions Leyton Orient.
Calli Weaver vs Luton
Speaking on the win over Luton, Ryan-Maynard said: “It’s another good result for us in the league this campaign, with it now certain that we will finish in second place and with the game against Leyton Orient on Wednesday night it was a good chance for us to change up the team.
“The players that did come in were really professional in their approach and I was pleased by their performances, Holly scored a brilliant goal to give us the three points which was great but we could have been slightly more clinical and killed off the game.”
Wednesday night's game under the lights at Bedfont Sports Club looks to be a tasty one as the women’s B team will face Leyton Orient who snatched the league title from them, gaining promotion to the Premier Division.
Talking on the clash with Leyton Orient, Ryan-Maynard explained: “We have been the two stand-out teams in the league this season so to play each other in the final game is quite fitting, it’s just a shame it’s not for the league title.
“Orient are a good side and have done well to get promoted and they are yet to be beaten this season so we want to make sure we ruin the party and hand them their only loss. It’s sure to be a good game and I know the players are up for it so it will be interesting to see what happens.”
