Brentford Women’s first team were beaten 3-0 in the Capital Cup Intermediate Section Final with three second half goals giving Dorking Wanderers the trophy at Bedfont Sports Club.
Goals from Charlotte Keenan, Gemma Shephard and Xayla-Rae Alberts gave Dorking the victory despite a performance where the Bees made a host of chances and can count themselves unfortunate to have lost by a three-goal margin.
Karleigh Osborne’s side will now turn their attention to their London South East Regional Women’s Football League Division One North campaign as they aim to achieve promotion.
As expected in a cup final, the game took time to come to life with neither side giving too much away in the opening stages in terms of clearcut chances.
An early Jodie Reid cross was aimed for top scorer Chloe Logie but the left footed effort just evaded the Brentford number nine who was beaten to the ball by the Dorking keeper.
On 10 minutes Wanderers did show some threat when a loose ball fell kindly for Charlotte Keenan, but after her touch took her round Freya Walker in the Brentford goal, the angle was tight and her effort could only find the side netting.

Logie then had her first attempt on the 15-minute mark and it was perhaps Brentford’s best of the opening 45 as Mollie Holmes clipped an effort into the box from the right, which wasn’t dealt with by the Dorking defence, and it sat up nicely for Logie to hit with the outside of her right boot but it edged just over the bar.
On 20 minutes Walker was called into action after Mika Keen curled a wide free-kick goalwards. The ball seemed destined for the top right-hand corner but for a strong hand from the Bees keeper who managed to push over.
Dorking perhaps shaded the latter of the half as Keen once again forced Walker into a save before Gemma Shephard had Dorking’s best opportunity when she received the ball with her back to goal just inside the area. She turned brilliantly before firing a left footed effort towards the bottom corner, but Walker once again made the save as the sides went in at the break level.
The Bees started the second period brightly and fashioned the first opportunity of the half when Nikki Saunders saw her shot from the edge of the box edge just wide of goal following a fast counter-attack from the side.
Nikki Saunders went close to scoring for Brentford
But it was Dorking who found the game’s first goal and it came five minutes before the hour when Shephard received the ball before laying it off nicely to the left for Keenan and she found the bottom left-hand corner to make it 1-0.
There was a huge call just a couple of minutes later and it fell the way of Dorking after Brentford were denied what they felt could well have been a penalty. Another strike at goal from Saunders from the edge hit the hand of a Dorking player but the referee awarded a free-kick despite any protests regarding a spot kick.
It should have been 1-1 on 66 minutes when Logie battled her way into the box in the inside left channel before digging out a cross with the outside of her right foot. It fell for Eleonora Cotterell but she was unable to convert at the far post from a tight angle during a spell where the Bees were really piling on the pressure.
The side will aim to bounce back in the league next week
Their job then got harder just a few minutes later when Dorking punished them as Alberts managed to ride a challenge and cut into the box and, despite the defender rushing across to narrow the angle, she managed to get a shot away and prod home to make it 2-0 to Dorking.
Another chance fell for Brentford as they searched for a way back into the game as Sophie Troth’s cross was headed just wide by Logie before substitute Orla McComb had a glorious chance just seconds after coming on after Logie’s parried shot was struck wide by the Brentford number 17.
Just four minutes from time it became three as Shephard found the net when she struck in from a free-kick centrally with a side footed effort into the bottom left-hand corner to wrap up the win for Wanderers.

Brentford Women’s head coach Karleigh Osborne was left proud of his players despite the defeat and hopes the side can look to use the loss as fuel for the remaining games this season.
After the match, he said: “It’s disappointing because we’ve got this far and we wanted to win it. I’ve got to be proud of my players because the performance was good, we created chances and moments we should have been a bit better in in front of goal which is a slight disappointment. I’m proud of my players, they did everything they could to try and win the game but unfortunately it wasn’t enough today.
“There was some good character there today. Chloe Webb kept on pushing until minute 96 where she was still running to get the throw in because she wants something to happen. Freya (Worsley) battled for everything, tried to get on the ball and tried to make things happen. Mollie (Holmes) was a leader today and was super. I can go through the whole team, but at the same time on these occasions everybody has to be at it and give ourselves the best opportunity. We tried today but it wasn’t enough.”
Discussing the remainder of the campaign, Osborne says he is looking for a reaction from his players as they head to Dulwich Hamlet Reserves next week.
“There is still plenty to play for,” said Osborne. “The league is what we want and this should fuel us, I’d like to think if we are a group of winners which I believe we are. We need to use it in the right way, we have got four games where we can achieve something that hasn’t been done and I hope we have enough to go and do that.”
