A regular contributor at Bedfont Sports Club with Brentford Women, Matthews has split her time between the pitch and the commentary box at men’s first team games since last season.

Interested in broadcasting and radio as a youngster, Matthews was given the chance to commentate alongside Mark Burridge last season following a half-time interview at Gtech Community Stadium about an upcoming women’s game at the stadium.

“I was interviewed at the Gtech last season, it was strange really because I didn’t feel very nervous despite speaking in front of a huge audience at a Premier League game,” said Matthews.

“After being interviewed at the stadium, I spoke to Amy (Crook) and mentioned that when I was younger, I was always interested in broadcast.

“From that point, I was put in contact with Mark, and some of the media team who asked whether I would be interested in doing commentary and I grabbed the opportunity with two hands.”

A successful debut in the commentary box when Brentford hosted Crystal Palace has led to Matthews now working on a rotation with other commentators, who join Burridge for home and away games.

The radio feed is available to fans in the stadium who may struggle to see the game from their seat or enjoy running commentary, and is also free to listen to internationally on the official Brentford website.

Speaking on her experiences, Matthews explained, “I love it, especially going to see the team that I support, the team that I play for, to then be able to commentate and assist in a way for those in the stadium who might be short-sighted, it’s really good to know that you’re giving back in that sense.

“I was absolutely honoured to be offered the role and I take it really seriously, it’s not just something you can turn up and wing, you’ve got to know your stuff.”

In a role that requires a blend of concentration and knowledge, Matthews says she has become more confident as the weeks go by and thanks Burridge for his support.

“The first game I did I was very nervous, I made sure I did a lot of research before the game, especially on the Crystal Palace players, but it went well.

“One of the biggest hurdles you can fall at is pronouncing players' names, that’s where having Mark next to me is really helpful because I’m able to listen to how he is saying the names when reading out the line-ups.

“You have to have confidence, you have to have self-assurance and you’ve got to be concise, not over talkative, but also do not become under present.”

After impressing in her new role, another amazing opportunity was awaiting Matthews who has entered her third season as a Brentford player.

Following the news of the Gtech hosting the Lionesses fixture against Australia in April, Matthews was offered the chance to be on co-commentary for what would be her first international fixture working the role.

“What an opportunity, to say I was a commentator on an England women’s game, that’s an incredible achievement,” said Matthews.

“Of course, I love working on Brentford match days, but it was the ultimate honour to commentate on my country especially after they had just won the European Championships.

“I’d like to thank the club for the amazing opportunities they have given me, I feel so proud to represent the club as both a player and a commentator.”
