Brentford Women’s B Team go through to the quarter-finals of the Capital Cup and extend their winning streak to six games after Sophie Boycott’s heroic penalty shootout performance.
Wimbledon who currently sit top of the Greater London Women’s Football League Division Two Central & West, winning eight games out of eight, proved to be a tough challenge for Brentford on Sunday afternoon.
Despite the Bees great run of form before the Christmas break, it had been six weeks since their last fixture back in December and this showed in the opening stages at Bedfont Sports Club.
Wimbledon controlled possession within the first half an hour of the game and made Brentford pay for their slow start on 22 minutes.

A lack of communication within the host's backline allowed the visitor's midfielder to strike the ball towards goal forcing Boycott into making a great save, but the Wimbledon forward was able to get there first to tap in the rebound and put her side in the lead.
Following the opposition’s goal, the Bees began to wake up and started playing some good football, Kasey Clifford found herself with time on the ball on 30 minutes and sprayed a nice pass out wide to Calli Weaver but her first-time effort went over the bar.
A minute later Abi Claringbold had the best chance of the first half for the home team. Nia Bowman went on a darting run and delivered a dangerous cross which was parried away by the Wimbledon keeper into the path of Claringbold, the number nine wasn’t able to keep her close-range shot down however as she saw her effort fly over the bar.

Claringbold made up for her missed chance a minute into the second half after she got the equaliser for the Bees.
Similar to the Wimbledon goal, a long-range strike from Brentford was saved but only into the path of the striker who showed good composure to side foot the ball into the net.
The B Team really stepped it up a gear in the second half with Tommy Ryan-Maynard’s half-time team talk seeming to have put some life into his side.
Despite pinning the visitors back, Wimbledon continued to battle hard and proved strong in their defence as Brentford pushed forward.
In what was a competitive affair between the two sides the away team managed to get to full-time without conceding another goal, taking the game to penalties.
Clifford, Claringbold, and Izzy Edwards tucked their spot kicks home with Boycott making two brilliant saves giving Lillie Elsbury the opportunity to put her side through to the quarter-finals of the Capital Cup, with one final kick of the ball.
Sophie Boycott was outstanding for the Women's B Team
Elsbury stepped up and confidently slotted her penalty into the bottom left corner running straight to Boycott along with the rest of the team to celebrate their win.
Speaking after the game Head Coach, Ryan-Maynard said: “It was a game of two halves, we did well to keep ourselves in it in the first half because they were putting us under pressure, but we still created a few chances despite not playing the best.
“We turned it around in the second half, we did everything we needed to do to get back into the game nice and early.
“We were prepared for a tough battle and the score line after 90 minutes showed the challenge we were up against, but I was over the moon with how calm we remained.
“Overall, I’m buzzing that we are through to the quarter-finals and to win it on penalties made it even more dramatic.”
