Charlie Goode made his Blackpool debut on Saturday as the Seasiders travelled to Southampton in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round.
Blackpool found themselves two down just past the hour mark courtesy of a Romain Perraud goal in each half.
Charlie Patino gave Mick McCarthy’s side hope when he halved the arrears on 67 minutes but, try as they might, the away side couldn’t force a leveller.
Blackpool return to Sky Bet Championship action on Saturday with a trip to in-form Middlesbrough.
Emirates FA Cup
Another side to bow out of the FA Cup to Premier League opposition on Saturday were Accrington Stanley, who fielded Brentford loanee Aaron Pressley.
Leeds United were the visitors to the Wham Stadium with Pressley restored to the starting XI following a foot injury.
Following an early Jack Harrison strike, Junior Firpo and Luis Sinisterra put the game beyond the Sky Bet League One side with a quickfire second-half double.
Pressley was withdrawn with 10 minutes to play, his replacement Leslie Adekoya netting Stanley’s late consolation.
Stanley host Lincoln City in League One this Saturday.
One side in the hat for tonight’s fifth-round draw are Burnley following their goalless draw at Ipswich Town.
Halil Dervisoglu was not involved at Portman Road on Saturday.
Top of the Sky Bet Championship, Burnley head to in-form Norwich City this coming Saturday lunchtime.
Sky Bet League One
In Sky Bet League One, Ellery Balcombe had a difficult afternoon on his debut for Bristol Rovers as they were beaten 5-1 at Morecambe.
The defeat drops the Gas to 12th ahead of their weekend visit from MK Dons.
Paris Maghoma will likely line up against Balcombe in that game after he made his full debut for MK against Exeter City on Saturday.
Jevani Brown netted either side of the break for the Grecians to consign Mark Jackson’s side to a third defeat in five matches which leaves them outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
Duncan Ferguson’s first game in charge of Forest Green Rovers looked set to be a winning one until Shrewsbury Town struck twice in injury-time at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.
Myles Peart-Harris was 70th-minute substitute, Forest Green leading at the time thanks to Jordan Garrick’s early goal.
However, Shrewsbury scored in the 94th and 98th minutes to grab all three points.
Bottom-of-the-table Forest Green host Peterborough United at the weekend.
On the continent
In the Netherlands, Mads Bech played the full 90 minutes in a pair of defeats for Groningen over the past week.
On Thursday, Groningen were beaten 1-0 at home by Cambuur before a 3-2 defeat at Volendam on Sunday.
Those defeats saw Groningen slip to the foot of the Eredivisie with FC Twente set to visit next Sunday.
There was no action for our other loan players this weekend.
Tariqe Fosu could make his Rotherham United debut in the South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield United next Sunday while Lachlan Brook and Crewe Alexandra have home games against Stockport County and Grimsby Town over the coming week.
