Chloe Webb was left disappointed after Brentford Women’s First Team saw their League Cup journey come to an end in the Third Round of the competition following Sunday’s defeat to Sutton United.

Webb’s first goal of the season wasn’t enough for the Bees who were edged out by a Sutton United side who play in the division above.

Speaking on the result, the number 11 said: “We played them (Sutton) twice last year, we drew away from home and won at home so we knew it was always going to be tough, there’s not much between us.

“We didn’t do our basics well and didn’t have enough energy throughout the whole pitch.”

The first half proved to be a scrappy affair with both sides struggling to break the other down, the game opened up after the break however and Sutton got themselves in front on 48 minutes after a smart finish from Lily Dent.

After conceding the hosts’ reaction was positive as Brentford had some good chances to get back on level terms, the best opportunity came through Sophie Troth but the midfielder who has recently returned from injury, sliced at her attempt in front of goal.

Dent doubled the lead for the visitors against the run of play leaving Webb frustrated at the missed opportunities.

Webb continued: “I thought it was unfortunate because we had so many shots and we just couldn’t convert them, but some games are like that, we came into the match slightly too late.”

Webb managed to pull one back for her side on 84 minutes after her attempted first-time cross from the left wing caught Sutton’s Zoe Mcnulty off guard as the ball bounced over the keeper and into the back of the net.

The strike from Webb saw Brentford heap on the pressure in the final minutes of the game but Sutton managed to keep the home side at bay ensuring they left Bedfont Sports Club with the win.

Despite the loss, Webb believed there were some positives her team could take from the match.

“We continued to battle throughout and even though we didn’t score in the first half we kept going, we spoke at half-time and was clear on what we needed to do but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.

“I think we can take a few positives from the game, especially from the second half but I think we should try to forget about it now and move onto next week.”
