Five ways to score goals for Brentford in Planet League
Here are some examples of the quick and easy sustainable activities you can do to score goals and help the environment:
1. Use more renewable energy at home
Renewable energy options in your home are often cheaper than non-renewable providers.
Downloading the National Grid app is a simple way to score a goal on Planet League. The app tells you when the electricity you are buying is greenest. For example, the app can tell you the best time to plug in your dishwasher or washing machine.
At Gtech Community Stadium, we have solar panels installed on the roof, generating renewable energy to power our stadium.
2. Become more energy efficient at home
Planet League highlights many simple ways to become more energy efficient at home.
For example, washing your football kit and other clothes at lower temperatures is one way.
Installing a smart meter from your energy supplier, switching off unused lights and upgrading your home lighting to energy-efficient LEDs are all quicks wins for saving energy.
At Brentford, we take a proactive approach to driving energy efficiency. We are compliant with relevant national legislation relating to carbon reporting and energy saving. We also have a centralised system in place to help us monitor and reduce our energy use where possible.
Our Robert Rowan Performance Centre was also constructed using reusable, low-carbon construction materials. This minimised the energy used during construction and will reduce our ongoing carbon footprint.
3. Conserve your water use
Using water efficiently can reduce excess water demand and wastage.
Planet League encourages you to score goals for example by taking shorter showers.
When making your cup of tea or coffee you could also make sure you fill your kettle with only the amount of water you need.
At the stadium and at the training ground we have installed low water consumption appliances to aid water efficiency.
4. Get out into nature!
Being outside in nature is great for your physical and mental health.
Planet League allows you to score goals by taking long walks up a hill. You can also enjoy a casual kick about, perhaps with Brentford FC Community Sports Trust football recreational sessions.
As the Bees, we have strong connection with nature. As part of our plans for the Robert Rowan Performance Centre, we’re investing in new landscaping and trees around Jersey Road, to enhance the regeneration of natural habitats and to create a more welcoming, attractive environment for the players and staff.
5. Reduce your use of single-use plastic
Single-use plastics are plastic items which are only used once before they are thrown away or recycled.
Unfortunately, many of these plastics end up polluting our oceans. Using a reusable bottle can minimise waste from plastic water bottles. This simple act is something that can help Brentford move up the Planet League. You can also make sure you recycle your plastics.
Brentford is committed to eradicating single-use plastic across different club sites. On matchdays we do not use single plastic cups but reusable pints for beer. Paper straws have replaced plastic, and single-use plastic stirrers and sachets have been removed. Sustainable wooden cutlery and bowls/plates are also in use.
Planet League will culminate in Green Football Weekend on 2-5 February when clubs will join fans in implementing changes by making their fixtures ‘greener games’ (this will include when Brentford take on Manchester City at Gtech Community Stadium).
Look out for our fan survey on sustainability, which will be released ahead of our fixture against Manchester City on 5 February. You'll be able to share your feedback on sustainability at Brentford FC.
