Brentford Chief Executive Mark Devlin has offered congratulations on behalf of the Club to Chairman Greg Dyke after he was appointed to one of the top jobs in English football.

The Football Association announced yesterday that Greg, who has been Chairman at Griffin Park since January 2006, would take up the role as Independent FA Chairman in the summer.

Greg will stand down from his position as Brentford FC Chairman and give up his place on the Board of Directors at the end of the 2012/13 season.

He will then start as Independent FA Chairman in July.

Greg, a former Director General of the BBC and Head of ITV Sport, was on the Board of Directors at Manchester United before becoming Brentford Chairman.

Mark, who has worked with Greg since he started at Brentford in July 2011, said: “I would like to congratulate Greg on behalf of everyone at Brentford Football Club.

“It is a fantastic job, a great opportunity and I am sure he will do a very good job.

“I am delighted for him.

“Greg has the experience needed for the role.

“Everyone at Brentford will be sorry to see him go and the FA is getting a good man.”

Greg took over as Chairman when Supporters’ Trust Bees United completed a takeover of the Club in January 2006.

He, along with other investors, loaned Bees United money to complete the takeover and helped the Club avoid being placed in to administration with an immediate cash injection in late 2005.

Greg was Chairman during the period when Matthew Benham took operational control of Brentford and then bought the majority shareholding in the Club from Bees United.

He has also played a key role in plans to build a new stadium in Lionel Road South.

Mark added: “Greg has seen Brentford through some difficult times.

“In more than seven years as Chairman there have been highs and lows but the Club is now thriving.

“Under the ownership of Matthew Benham, the Club is pushing for promotion to The Championship and looking to move to a state-of-the-art stadium in Brentford.

“Greg has played a key role on the Board while this progress has been made.

“Brentford Football Club is in a healthy state and Greg has been an important part of that.

“We wish Greg all the best in his new position and hope his final act as Chairman will be to oversee promotion to The Championship.

“The next monthly Board Meeting will take place on Thursday.

“As well as the planned agenda, there will be a discussion about who will be the next Chairman.”

Greg is Chairman of Brentford FC (Lionel Road) Limited, the company which will manage the new stadium.

He will have to stand down from this role in the summer.

He is, however, not on the Board of Lionel Road Developments Limited, the company responsible for building the new ground.

Brian Burgess, a Director of Lionel Road Developments Limited, was Bees United Chairman when the Trust completed a takeover of Brentford FC in January 2006.

He said Greg supported the Trust as it completed the takeover and has played an important part in the move towards a new stadium.

Brian said: "We will certainly miss Greg's leadership and guidance on the Lionel Road project.

"Greg helped and encouraged the takeover of Brentford by Bees United and was nominated by the Trust as Chair of the Club.

“He has always championed the new stadium project and has been one of the driving forces behind it, although he is not involved in the day-to-day work to plan and build the stadium.

“He will leave the project in a very strong position.

“We will look forward to welcoming him to the opening game at Lionel Road as FA Chairman."

Brentford FC Manager Uwe Rösler said he would be sad to see Greg leave his position.

"I think it is a fantastic honour for Greg,” said Uwe, speaking to Bees Player yesterday

“It is also testament to Brentford that we had such a great Chairman and I will be sad to see him leave.

“He was one of the people who supported me most and I really enjoyed his company and our working relationship.

“I could also come to him and speak to him so it is unfortunate for me personally that he will go.

“For the Football Club and for Greg it is a fantastic opportunity and a great honour.”
