B team defender Conor McManus felt overall the young Bees were well worth their victory on Tuesday evening as they overcame Wealdstone late on in the Middlesex Senior Cup to progress to the semi-final stage.
Conor grabbed the assist for Romeo Beckham’s winner in stoppage time as he completed his first full match in a Brentford shirt. The 18-year-old defender felt the group put in a positive display.
He explained: “I think the lads deserved it. Throughout the course of the game, I thought we played well and we were the better team and it was well deserved.
“Neil (MacFarlane) said in the dressing room that he wanted us to start rapid because last time we played in the cup we were a bit slow. We got two goals and I think we eased off a bit after that. Coming into the game we knew they were going to be a really good team from the National League. We knew they would be physical, strong, and able to play and to be fair to them they challenged us.”
Discussing how’s he settled into the club over the past month or so, Conor says he’s learning all the time and was pleased to complete his first 90 minutes as he came in for Val Adedokun at left back.
He continued: “I’m loving it to be honest. I’ve been dying for a start and to get 90 minutes and to play the way we did as a team and as an individual I don’t think you can ask for a better game to play in than that. Coming into the game we knew they would be physical but I don’t think you can prepare for that. We challenged them and overall we came out on top and gave a good performance.
“We want to improve every single year and win every competition we’re in and to get another step closer is what we want. I’ve never learned so much through football. To train every day where the quality is unbelievable, I think I’m learning as a player but also about myself. I know I have to work hard and put the hard yards in and you will get your reward and your minutes.”
