Brentford may have missed out on promotion at Wembley in the npower League One Play-Off Final but there was local success on the hallowed turf that day.

Corpus Christi RC Primary School, from New Malden, were crowned npower League One Kids Cup winners after victory on the hallowed turf on the same afternoon, Sunday May 19.

The school won the right to represent Brentford by beating Little Ealing Primary School in the final of the area tournament held at Goals Soccer Centre in Isleworth back in January.

They then won the npower League One Kids Cup South at Crawley Town FC in March.

They took on teams from Swindon Town, Colchester United, Leyton Orient, Milton Keynes Dons and Crawley to win their way through to the final, where they beat Portsmouth 2-0 with goals from Jamal Musiala and Jordan Aina.

That earned them a place at Wembley to take on Chetwynd Junior School, who represented Coventry City.

Corpus Christi had the better of the first half and Ethan Etukudo had a good chance well saved.

But they fell behind early in the second period when Chetwynd front man Ethan Meadows fired home with the outside of his right boot.

The New Malden school had only a few minutes to find an equaliser but came up with one when Musiala slotted home after receiving a tidy through-ball from Etukudo.

The game went straight to penalties – three each – after the 1-1 draw and Chetwynd missed their first two spot kicks.

That enabled Benjamin Elliot to step up and score the winning penalty and give Corpus Christi – and Brentford – the trophy.

It was the second year in a row Brentford had been successful in the tournament after Collis Primary School, from Teddington, won the npower League One Kids Cup at Wembley in 2012.

Following the match, each team climbed the stairs up to Wembley's Royal Box and were presented with their respective medals.

And, after the presentation was complete and the photos had been taken, players from both teams became the npower flag-bearers and walked out with Brentford and Yeovil Town before the Play-Off Final.

Corpus Christi captain Jordan Aina said: "It felt fantastic playing at Wembley and it really encourages us for the future.

"It was a brilliant experience to play in such big stadium - It's definitely something I'll be telling people about."

Corpus Christi teacher Tony Mesourouni, who accompanied the kids at the national stadium, said: "I'm overwhelmed.

“I'm really proud of the boys.

“It's not a nice way to win, or lose of course, on penalties, but luckily for us we managed to take it.

"The game itself was fantastic.

“You could see the boys were a little bit nervous but as soon as the goals went in they got the ball down and played it around well and there wasn't a lot between the two teams.

"It's been brilliant since we arrived at Wembley.

“Doing the tour, both inside and outside the stadium, was just fantastic."
