New Development Squad signing Emmanuel Onariase said that Brentford’s philosophy and direction was what sold him on a move across the capital from West Ham United. The 19-year-old defender signed an 18-month contract with The Bees after impressing while on trial. The commanding defender said he really enjoyed his time on trial with Flemming Pedersen’s side and can’t wait to get going full-time with Brentford.
“I am really excited and I am really looking forward to it,” said Emmanuel, speaking to Bees Player after signing. “It is a new experience in my life and a new chapter. I can’t wait to get started. The whole philosophy behind the club sold it to me. It is a great club. I have learned a lot from training with the coach this week. The attention to detail and the opportunity at the club is fantastic. The style of play attracted me because it is good as well.”
Emmanuel joined West Ham as a 12-year-old and spent seven years with the East London club, signing his first professional contract last summer. After such a long time with The Hammers Emmanuel admitted it was a difficult decision to leave but he felt that Brentford gave him the best platform to progress in his career.
“It was a difficult decision to leave West Ham United but that is life,” said Emmanuel. “You have to do what is best for you and best for your career. I am looking forward to the opportunity here. It is all about getting to the next level in life and that is what I want to do at Brentford.”
The central defender was named on the bench for West Ham in their Barclays Premier League fixture against Arsenal in March 2015. The buzz and the atmosphere of being around the first-team is something that has stuck with Manny and he is keen to recreate that with his new club.
“The experience of being on the bench and almost getting on the pitch is what dreams are made of,” said Emmanuel. “The buzz of the match and everything that comes with it is the feeling that you want. I can’t wait to get started here. As a footballer you have the passion for the game and I can’t wait to get playing.”
