An injury time Michael Olakigbe strike ensured Brentford B progressed to the third round of the London Senior Cup after thrilling Erith & Belvedere clash.
Neil MacFarlane made six changes to the side that started in the 2-0 win over Peterborough United in their last outing as Daniel Oyegoke, Tristan Crama, Nico Jones, Lucias Vine, Alex Gilbert and Tony Yogane came into the team with new signing Romeo Beckham making the bench.
The young Bees got off to the worst possible start at Park View Road after they found themselves a goal down on three minutes.
Erith’s Bradley Ryan delivered a well-placed corner kick which found Lewis Chambers who rose well and powerfully headed the ball past Brentford’s Trialist keeper.
The competition holders reacted well and nearly got an equaliser just a few minutes later from a corner of their own, but Vine saw his header comfortably saved by Adam Molloy in the host’s net.
On 15 minutes Gilbert came close for Brentford, after linking up well with Olakigbe the captain found himself in a great position to have a shot on goal, but his side-footed effort was saved well by the Erith number one.
The home team looked to frustrate the Bees who were controlling possession in their search for a leveller, Ryan found himself in the book just 20 minutes in after stopping Isaac Holland from taking a quick throw in.
It looked only a matter of time before the Bees found the back of the net with Gilbert becoming increasingly influential as the first half went on.
The number 10 clipped a brilliant ball over the Erith defence, but Holland was unable to make anything of the pass as his first touch took him away from goal.
Brentford eventually got their deserved equaliser on 33 minutes with Gilbert at the heart of the action again.
The attacking midfielder played a clever ball through the host's back line into the path of Vine who showed great composure to curl the ball into the far-right corner from 10-yards out.
This goal seemed to energise the visitors as Erith struggled to deal with the slick passing that MacFarlane’s side were portraying.
Gilbert continued to find space in the final third of the pitch with the Bees skipper playing through Val Adedokun who made a great overlapping run from the left-back position, but the full-back’s attempt on goal went just wide of the post.
A minute before half-time Olakigbe forced Molloy into making a smart save as the Brentford winger showed great skill to get around Fraser Walker and unleash a powerful shot that was flicked round the post by the host's keeper.
Erith started the second half in the same fashion that they began the game in, catching Brentford off guard once again from a corner in the opening minutes after the break.
The deep cross fell to Ryan at the far post with the number 11 having time to bring the ball down and squeeze his shot in the near post putting his side in front.
The young Bees looked to get themselves back on level terms for the second time of the game and came close to doing so on 62 minutes with Beckham nearly getting a goal moments after being introduced to the game.
Gilbert’s cut back pass was attacked well by the new Brentford signing but his flicked attempt at goal went over the bar.
10 minutes later MacFarlane’s side were unbelievably unfortunate to not make it 2-2 after Kyreece Lisbie’s header rolled along the bar before falling towards Beckham who also saw his header roll across the Erith bar before going out of play.
Olakigbe let fly from long range on 76 minutes with a strong deflection leaving Molloy rooted to the ground but luckily for the hosts the ball went inches wide.
Brentford got themselves back on level terms with three minutes of normal time to play with Lisbie producing a moment of brilliance.
The forward displayed his dribbling ability as he skipped round two Erith defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.
After putting the hosts under massive amounts of pressure the Bees grabbed the winner on 93 minutes through Olakigbe.
The winger saw his deflected shot from 20-yards find the back of the net this time, ensuring a hard-fought victory for Brentford B on Tuesday evening.
