FC Midtjylland have won the Danish Superliga.

The club, where Brentford FC Owner Matthew Benham has the majority shareholding, clinched the title with a 0-0 draw against FC Vestsjælland last night, Thursday May 21.

They are ten points clear at the top of the table with just three games to go.

The title is the first in FC Midtjylland’s history.

FCM, as they are known, have previously finished second and third in the top tier and been runners-up in the Danish Cup twice since their formation in 1999 after the merger of two clubs but now have a major trophy.

FCM have led the league for the majority of the season after winning six of their first seven games.

They have won 21 and lost just four of their 30 games so far this season.

There are strong links between Brentford and FCM.

Rasmus Ankersen is Chairman at FCM and Co-Director of Football at Griffin Park while Brentford Chairman Cliff Crown is on the board at the Danish side and Nity Raj is a Director of both clubs.

“I would like to thank the fans for their messages and support of FCM since we became involved.

“As we have said over the past months, the links between Brentford and FCM will continue to strengthen, although they will always be separate clubs.

“I hope there are many more days like these to come at both Brentford and FCM.”

Rasmus said: “Yesterday was the biggest day in FCM’s history.

“To win its first ever title is a massive achievement for the club and the whole region.

“No-one expected it to happen this soon, but it did, and we now want to enjoy the moment together.

“The success of FCM is first and foremost down to 15 years of hard work by lots of dedicated people.

“Seven of the players in the starting line-up yesterday came through the academy, and it clearly shows that it can pay off to invest in the long term perspectives of a football club.

“The future looks bright for FC Midtjylland.

“Already in July we are going to play Champions League qualification, and our ambition is to be fighting for the title again next season.

“One of FCM’s goals for next season is to build an even closer relationship with Brentford.

“There are some great opportunities to share expertise, specialists and philosophy, and we have already started to intensify this collaboration."
