Brentford boss Thomas Frank has expressed his excitement about Mikkel Damsgaard’s prospects for the upcoming Premier League season.
The Denmark international signed for the Bees in August 2022 and later revealed in an interview that, following six months on the sidelines, both he and the club knew he would require time to regain the strength, speed and confidence that made him one of the most sought-after young players in Europe at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
Damsgaard made 41 appearances for club and country last season and has featured during both of Brentford’s Summer Series games in the USA this summer. His head coach is pleased with his progress.
“He came to us after a difficult year with injury and illness,” Frank told the gathering media in Washington DC.
“Normally it would take a year until you are back to your normal self. He’s come to a new country and a new league and that demands extra.
“He’s been good in pre-season. He came back in a good place. I’m excited for him this season. We know he has the ability to find a pass, score goals and set up other players, and that’s what I’m excited to hopefully see from him this season. It looks promising.”
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game against Aston Villa at FedExField, Frank said that the Summer Series has provided his side with a strong foundation ahead of the new league campaign.
“It’s worked very well,” he continued, "I’m very pleased with almost everything.
"The foundation in terms of the training, on the pitch, in the gym – with the facilities we’ve had – has been really good.
“It’s been a great tournament with some great games. We’ve played in some fantastic venues in front of the American fans. On top of that, that staff and players have had some fantastic experiences to give us memories and a little bit more to the togetherness.”
