Best of the Bees
Another home goal frenzy saw the Bees snatch a dramatic late draw against Manchester City.
Many owners should feel unlucky that Bryan Mbeumo (£7.8m) couldn’t grab an attacking return, knowing he set up five chances and had several himself, the closest of which came right at the end when Nathan Aké (£5.3m) headed his shot off the line.
Yoane Wissa (£6.2m) continued his form meaning he now has two goals and an assist in the last two Premier League matches. Despite scoring in the game Wissa was fourth for expected goal (xG) underachievers in Gameweek 21. This means that he was unlucky not to register more goals. Wissa had five attempts on goal against Man City, the most in the game.
Mads Roerslev’s (£4.3m) cross that Wissa converted puts the forward level with Mbeumo and Erling Haaland (£14.8m) as the Premier League’s top scorer in home matches. But the 28-year-old has reached his nine goals in far less time, just nine matches, 784 minutes.
Tuesday’s heroics came straight after his haul at Southampton in Gameweek 20, where he became this season’s third player to achieve eight shots in a single match.
The Spotlight
Rico Henry (£4.3m) deserves a mention. After starting the FA Cup match with Plymouth, he was able to come off the bench and make his first Premier League appearance since picking up a serious knee injury in September 2023.
A consequence of this long absence has been the makeshift deployment of Lewis-Potter at left-back.
Lewis-Potter netted in the 5-0 win at Southampton and it was the 23-year-old’s in-swinging cross that brought Christian Nørgaard’s (£4.8m) stoppage-time equaliser against Man City.
Despite mostly being in defence, Lewis-Potter sits joint-third for shots on target (10) amongst the Bees squad.
Last season, he finished outright third (20) whilst also being the number three for attempts inside the box (36).
Should Henry’s gradual return move him further upfield, we might see more of the goal-scoring instinct that brought 25 goals over Hull’s 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns.
Best of the Rest
Elsewhere, it’s no surprise to see Alexander Isak (£9.3m) once again on the scoresheet.
Isak’s brace and assist against Wolves totalled 16 FPL points, becoming the fourth player in Premier League history to net in eight successive matches. It’s a sensational run of 11 goals, three assists and an average of 10.625 points.
Joining Foden on a score of 15 was Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) and Marc Guehi (£4.5m). The Fulham player’s two soft crosses both bizarrely snuck their way into the net. Now on over 100 points, Iwobi ranks fifth amongst midfielders.
In Demand
As of now, the seven most-bought players heading into Gameweek 22 belong to either Nottingham Forest or Newcastle.
Chris Wood (£6.9m) leads the way, with goals in three consecutive matches taking his total to 13 – despite not being inside the top 25 players for overall attempts (37) or box shots (30).
His defensive team-mates are being purchased too, as their home clash with Southampton puts the side with nine clean sheets against the division’s worst attack.
Captaincy
In fact, Wood could be deemed a good captaincy choice, though it’s tough to go against Mohamed Salah (£13.7m) during such an outstanding individual campaign.
Having said that, picking either Isak or Cole Palmer (£11.4m) over him went well in Gameweek 21.
The Swede would’ve had even more armbands if his manager’s pre-match words hadn’t created doubt about his availability.
