Brentford were saddened to hear of the recent death of former defender Ian Dargie on Friday, 27 November in Haverfordwest, Wales, aged 84. He was first choice centre half for the Club throughout the 1950s and made more than 250 league appearances for Brentford over a ten year period.

Ian Charles Dargie was born in Camberwell, South London, on 3 October 1931. He signed for Brentford from non-league Tonbridge on 25 February 1952 and made his debut for The Bees in a Second Division match at left half against Hull City at Boothferry Park on 19 April 1952.

He waited patiently for his chance, and eventually Wally Bragg was moved to right back to accommodate him in early 1954. From that time on Ian was a regular fixture in the side, and ever-present twice in his career, in 1957/58 and 1960/61.

On Easter Sunday in 1959 he suffered a broken leg at Bournemouth, which ruled him out for the rest of the year. It derailed the Club’s promotion hopes from Division Three as the Club only won three matches from their remaining ten to finish in third position, four points off the promotion places.

His final appearance for the Club was in a 3-1 win at Darlington on 6 October 1962. After 263 league matches, Ian was released in the summer of 1963 and joined non-league Yiewsley - later re-named Hillingdon Borough - where he finished his playing career.

He later worked for Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic before retirement. The Club’s condolences go to his family and friends at this time.
