Brentford forward Yoane Wissa has revealed his on and off-pitch targets for the Africa Cup of Nations, as he prepares to head to the competition with his country, DR Congo.

In Group F, two-time AFCON winners DR Congo play Zambia on 17 January, Morocco on 21 January and Tanzania on 24 January.

And Wissa, who has 18 caps for his country, has said that he's looking forward to heading to the tournament, which begins on Saturday 13 January, and is going to make his family proud.

Speaking to On The Whistle Podcast, Wissa said: “When I was born, I didn't expect to play football, I didn't expect to play for my national team, so I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to it.

“My mum cried when she knew that I was going - I’m proud and I want to make my parents proud.”

He added: “I think the quarter-final would be a realistic goal - after that, it would be hard, but let's see what happens.

"[To win AFCON] would mean a lot because it's been a long journey. Of course for the country, but also for my family.

"I can't imagine it because I don't want to think about that too much! But we just have to work hard and be together because it's going to be a long journey."

His Brentford team-mate Frank Onyeka will also be in Ivory Coast for the tournament, with his Nigeria side also looking to lift the trophy on 11 February.

When asked about potentially facing his friend in the knockout stages, Wissa laughed: "I’d be happy to play against him! They’re a very good team with very good players, of course, it would be a tough game.

“I won't say we're going to win 100%, but I won't say we're going to lose 100%, it would be a tough game for them.

“AFCON is not easy, there’s a game every three days, but everyone is willing and wants to win.”
