Brentford forward Yoane Wissa played the full 90 minutes as DR Congo reached the knockout stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after a goalless draw with Tanzania.

A point was enough for two-time winners DR Congo to finish second in Group F behind Morocco. Wissa and the Leopards face Egypt in a last-16 tie on Sunday 28 January (8pm kick-off GMT).

In a game of very few chances, Wissa created two openings late in the second half.

First, he forced Tanzania goalkeeper Aishi Manula into a full-stretch dive to claw away an attempted chip, before firing over the crossbar after a corner.

But neither side truly looked like finding their way to a goal at Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium.

Frank Onyeka’s Nigeria will be joining DR Congo in AFCON’s last 16.

The Bees midfielder played just over an hour as the Super Eagles beat Guinea-Bissau 1-0 on Monday 22 January, the winner coming when Opa Sanganté diverted a Moses Simon cross into his own net nine minutes before the break.

Nigeria finished second in Group A behind Equatorial Guinea and will now face Cameroon on Saturday 27 January (8pm kick-off GMT).

At the Asian Cup, Saman Ghoddos and Iran continued their perfect record by beating United Arab Emirates 2-1 – the Brentford man playing 67 minutes at Education City Stadium, Qatar.

Iran finished top of Group C with nine points and will play Syria on Wednesday 31 January (4pm kick-off GMT) in the round of 16.
