Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard said that it was an "easy decision" to sign a new contract with the Bees.

The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a new deal which runs until the summer of 2030, with the club having the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

He explained why he has committed his long-term future to the west Londoners.

"It’s nice to get it done," said Damsgaard. "I’ve enjoyed my years here so it was a no-brainer for me to extend - I’m very happy.

“This season has been a lot better for me personally with a lot more playing time, but I’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere at the club, time with my team-mates and the way things have been set up.

“I’m very proud and happy to be here. I’m very happy to see how the fans support me. It makes you give that extra five per cent and I’m very thankful for the fans we have.

“With the playing time now coming, it was a pretty easy decision to extend."

Having joined Brentford from Italian side Sampdoria in August 2022, this season has seen Damsgaard establish himself as an integral player in Thomas Frank's side.

"[Frank] is the one who wanted me when I first signed here and he’s always kept a big belief in me, even though I struggled at times," Damsgaard continued.

“There’s a lot of things I’ve been working on but it’s more a mentality and confidence thing. I feel like I’m pretty confident now compared to when I first signed, it slowly comes with good performances.

“Getting to play more is also a big thing; getting consistent minutes is a big part of building your confidence and getting used to where to be or what to do on the pitch.

“I’ve also been fit for a longer period of time which also has a part in it, so it’s probably everything together [that has helped with performances]."

Asked about his aims for the remainder of the season, as well as for the duration of his new contract, Damsgaard added: "I’m not really one to set specific goals but just to continue being open-minded, keep on improving, and to be the best version I can be to help the team and hopefully create good results and good moments.

“We have a really good team so hopefully we can push for something special, but we also know it takes a lot to stay in the league - it’s the best league in the world - so it’s very hard to go out there and compete every week."
