Brentford Club Captain Kevin O’Connor has signed a new one-year contract.

The long-serving skipper has put pen to paper on a new deal to keep him at Griffin Park until the end of the 2013/14 season.

Kevin, who turned 31 last week, signed professional terms with Brentford in 1999 after progressing through the Club’s youth system.

The new deal means he will be start his 15th season as a professional with The Bees in August.

Kevin missed much of the 2011/12 season with a foot injury and has been out since November after sustaining an ankle injury against Portsmouth.

He has started training again in the last few days and is working his way back to full fitness.

Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said: “It is very important we give Kevin, a player who has dedicated his whole career to Brentford Football Club, the chance to come back from his bad injury.

“He has been unfortunate last year and this year with two injuries.

“I am really happy to have him back, he started to train with us this week.

“It is important to have an experienced player, a player who has a good attitude to his job every day around on the training pitch.

“He, and Farid El Alagui [who is also training again after a long-term knee injury], will lift the whole squad.

“The work he has put in to his rehabilitation this season and last season is fantastic.

“He is a player who can play in different positions for us and he does everything in the interests of Brentford FC.

“It was very important for me to keep Kevin on board.”

Uwe continued: “We have a very young squad, we need experience around the group.

“He will offer that in abundance.

“Kevin is great in the dressing room and in training.

“We have had two experienced players missing for most of the season and we have missed that experience.

“Kevin is the Club Captain, we missed him in the dressing room, we missed him in training and we missed him in games.

“He is only just 31 years old, he is still at a good football age.

“Medically there is no problem for the future.

“I am looking forward to working with him and him being around the players every day will benefit the squad.”

“Kevin has been an outstanding servant and ambassador for the club, both on and off the pitch, and will continue to play a key role for Uwe and the team as we move forward.

“His levels of professionalism and personal standards are a great example to our younger players of how they should go about their daily lives as a full time player.

“To see him battle back from a nasty injury with such focus and determination should encourage all players and staff to ensure they give the best they can each and every day.

“Kevin has undoubtedly earned this new contract and we look forward to seeing him make a significant contribution in the weeks and months ahead.”

Kevin made his debut in February 2000 against Wycombe Wanderers and in more than 13 years since he has filled just about every position on the pitch.

His years with the club were marked with a testimonial match against Fulham in July 2010, a few months after his 400th appearance.

Now in his 14th season as a First Team player, he became only the fourth man to play 400 Football League games for The Bees when he featured against Bury on the first day of the 2012/13 power League One season.

Kevin has played 484 games for the Club in all competitions, scoring 43 goals, fourth on the all-time appearance list.

He has made 408 Football League appearances for The Bees, scoring 32 goals, and needs to play 12 more league games to go ahead of Jamie Bates and in to third on the list of league appearances for Brentford.
