Kirsty Matthews labelled the Women’s team’s win over Watford Ladies Development at the Gtech Community Stadium as ‘unbelievable’ as they impressed with a 4-2 victory.
The winger netted on the day, alongside Chloe Logie and Eleonora Cotterell which added to an earlier Watford own goal.
Reflecting on the win, Kirsty explained: “The occasion was amazing and I’m buzzing to get the three points on the board.”
Having fallen behind against the run of play, Kirsty admitted the side had to keep their cool and play their game as they have done all season.
She continued: “I think it was coming, the girls were getting forward and putting balls into the box but to score that goal was incredible. It was the best feeling ever!”
On a historic day for the Women’s team, Kirsty said to have more than 5,000 people cheering on the side was a huge boost as they kicked on to win the game.
“It was one of those things when you’re playing you have to block it out but as soon as I scored to put us in the lead, I felt like we could fully enjoy the occasion,” said Kirsty.
“It gave us that morale booster and showed that it’s not just us 11 on the pitch. It’s everyone backing us, it meant everything. The fans staying right to the end was really nice.”
Kirsty also feels that the day acted as a real positive step for the Women’s side and paid tribute to the work behind the scenes in Women’s Team General Manager Amy Crook and Women’s Team Chairman Roger Crook.
She explained: “We’re really grateful, and thankful to Amy and Roger and all the staff behind the scenes that have made it happen for us. For us girls to go and perform, I’m so glad that we got the win and the three points at the end of the day.
“For the Club in general it’s something we can look back on and be very proud of where we’ve come as a Club and strive forward from here. Karleigh said to us in the changing room that this is just the start for us and we hope to go all the way.”
