THE GROUND

Glanford Park Jack Brownsword Way Scunthorpe DN15 8TD

Glanford Park opened in 1988 and was the first new ground purpose built for a club in 33 years.

Scunthorpe had played at the Old Showground since their formation in 1899 before the move in to the 9,088 capacity ground.

Away fans are usually housed in the AMS Stand, the South Stand, and there is room for 1,650 visiting supporters.

More can be housed in the Scunthorpe Telegraph Stand, West Stand, if there is demand.

THE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

It is approximately 193 miles from Griffin Park to Glanford Park by road.

It is a very easy stadium to find if you travel by road - take the M1, M18, M180 and M181 and the ground is visible from the end of the motorway.

Paid for parking is available at the ground.

The nearest station to Glanford Park is Althorpe, which is around two miles from the ground while Scunthorpe station is a similar distance away in the opposite direction.

Both stations are served by Northern and First TransPennine Express services.

The usual route would involve a Grand Central, East Coast or First Hull Trains service from King's Cross to Doncaster before changing.

It is also possible to take an East Midlands Trains service from St Pancras to Sheffield and change.

The Supporters' Association will be running coaches to every game this season - details of times and prices will be announced in due course.

THE RECENT HISTORY

Apart from six seasons in Division Two in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Scunthorpe were generally a lower league club before their recent spell in the Championship.

They were promoted from the fourth tier in 2005 under Brian Laws and when he left in November 2006, physiotherapist Nigel Adkins stepped up.

He won League One in his first year in charge and although Scunthorpe came straight back down he took them up again in 2009.

Adkins kept Scunthorpe in The Championship in 2009/10 but was offered the Southampton job and left Glanford Park.

Ian Baraclough replaced him but lasted less than six months before he was sacked and Alan Knill was brought in.

Knill couldn't keep Scunthorpe up and they eventually finished six points from safety and bottom of The Championship in 2011.

Their first season back in League One was not a success, finishing eighteenth.

THE MANAGER

Alan Knill took over as Scunthorpe manager in March 2011.

Knill had been in charge at Bury for just over three years and left them on the brink of promotion from League Two, which they achieved after his departure.

The 46-year-old played more than 550 Football League games as a central defender for clubs including Bury and Scunthorpe and also won a cap for Wales.

He started his managerial career at Rotherham United, having previously had a spell as caretaker manager.

THE TOP SCORER

Striker Andy Barcham scored ten goals last term for Scunthorpe United, nine of them in League One.

The 25-year-old Bosman signing from Gillingham spent three years at Priestfield after starting his career at Tottenham Hotspur.

THE KEY MEN

Alan Knill has released several players as The Iron begin another season in League One.

Josh Lillis, Andrew Wright, Eddie Nolan, Sam Togwell, Michael O'Connor, Jordan Robertson, Garry Thompson, Aron Wint, Ashley Palmer, and Cliff Byrne were given free transfers.

Through the in-door has come goalkeeper James Severn (Derby County), Josh Walker (Watford) and midfielder Callum Kennedy (Swindon Town).

20-year-old James graduated from Derby County's academy system and was released at the end of last season.

Callum, born in Chertsey, was courted by several clubs this summer but chose The Iron.

Josh Walker signed permanently from Watford after a successful loan spell at Glanford Park.

Knill has also agreed terms with a full back and striker and will name them upon completion of their medicals.
