Lewis Macleod has extended his Brentford contract, committing his future to The Bees until the summer of 2019. The Scottish midfield player is currently recuperating from a serious knee injury he sustained in Brentford’s win over Queens Park Rangers in October. His contract was due to expire in the summer of 2018 but he has signed a new deal which now runs to the end of the 2018/19 season.

Lewis joined Brentford from Glasgow Rangers for an undisclosed fee at the end of 2014. The 22-year-old arrived with a hamstring problem and further injuries meant he did not make his debut until February 2016. But he was fully fit to start the current season and played 13 of Brentford’s first 15 Sky Bet Championship games this term, starting ten and contributing five assists, before his knee injury.

Dean Smith, Brentford FC Head Coach, said: “I am really pleased that Lewis has extended his contract with us. He has had a really unfortunate time with injuries since he has joined Brentford and prior to his injury against QPR he was beginning to show the undoubted potential he possesses.

“He has been missed by us since getting injured but we are pleased with his recovery to date. It is refreshing for me to see our Club looking after its players after unfortunate injuries and having faith in their recovery.”

Phil Giles, Brentford FC Co-Director of Football, said: "When we learned about the nature of the injury to Lewis, there was no doubt that we were going to look after him in the same way that we did Scott Hogan, including the opportunity to extend his contract, giving him every opportunity to return in the best possible shape. It was simply a matter of getting everyone together to make that agreement with Lewis. This took a few weeks but I'm glad it's all sorted now and we can look positively to the future."

Lewis joined Rangers as a 10-year-old in 2004 and made his first-team debut in 2012. He played 75 times, scoring 16 goals in total, for the Ibrox club. Lewis has represented Scotland at every age from Under-16 to Under-21 and was called up to the full international squad for matches against Republic of Ireland and England just before his move to Brentford. He has played eight matches an Under-21 international level.
