Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with a 4-1 victory over Brentford at Gtech Community Stadium.

Darwin Núñez put the visitors ahead in the first half, before Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah extended Liverpool's lead after the break.

Ivan Toney pulled one back with 15 minutes remaining - the striker's fourth goal in five Premier League appearances - but Cody finish four minutes from time dashed any hopes of a late Bees comeback.

Núñez lob gives Liverpool the lead

Thomas Frank stuck with a 3-5-2 formation and made one change for the visit of Liverpool to Gtech Community Stadium, with Kristoffer Ajer replacing Ethan Pinnock, who missed out with an ankle injury sustained in the 2-0 win over Wolves last time out.

Liverpool made two changes to the side which beat Burnley 3-1 at Anfield: Trent Alexander-Arnold missed out through injury and was replaced at right-back by Conor Bradley, while Ibrahima Konaté returned from a one-match suspension and was preferred to Jarell Quansah.

The first chance of the game went Brentford's way, after some quick thinking from Ben Mee. The centre-back took a throw-in to Neal Maupay, who progressed into the final third and played in Vitaly Janelt. The midfielder sent a low cross into Toney at the back post, but it rolled out for a goal kick.

Mark Flekken was twice called into action in the 11th minute. Bradley ran into the area and, with a bit of luck, found himself in on goal. He poked the ball towards the far corner but the Bees keeper denied him, before getting to his feet quickly to deny Diogo Jota.

Brentford were in again five minutes later, when Maupay and Toney combined well. A reverse pass from the former saw the latter receive the ball on the edge of the six-yard box and, with Virgil van Dijk breathing down his neck, the centre-forward shot wide.

Toney had another chance soon after, when the duo linked up once more. A ball over the top from Maupay saw Toney in again, this time with more space to run into. It was Konaté chasing him down on this occasion, and the centre-back did enough to put him off his shot, which was saved comfortably by Caoimhín Kelleher.

Liverpool took the lead on the 35-minute mark. A Brentford free-kick was cleared towards Jota, who flicked on to an unmarked Núñez and the Uruguayan raced through on goal unopposed. One-on-one with Flekken, he lifted the the ball over the on-rushing Dutchman and into the back of the net.

Toney on target but three second-half goals secure Reds win

First-half substitute Salah had a chance to double the Reds' lead inside the opening five minutes of the second half. The Egyptian was played over the top by a header from van Dijk but, with Flekken making himself big in the Bees goal, he skewed it wide.

But the forward soon assisted their second goal of the day, when he charged down the right and squared to Mac Allister. The Argentinian benefitted from a fortunate ricochet to beat Kristoffer Ajer and toe home from close range.

And it was 3-0 with 68 minutes on the clock, as Salah got on the scoresheet himself. Kelleher launched the ball forward and Gakpo made first contact to flick the ball on to the Egyptian. Salah got the better of Collins, shot back across goal and into the far corner.

Toney pulled one back with 15 minutes to play, after some great play from the substitutes. Frank Onyeka and Yoane Wissa, who both returned from the Africa Cup of Nations this week, combined down the right, with the DR Congo international squaring to Sergio Reguilón. The full-back's effort was saved by Kelleher, before Toney netted the follow-up with aplomb.

Gakpo made it 4-1 on 86 minutes to dash any hopes of a Bees comeback. A ball over the top from Díaz was missed by Collins and the Dutchman finished past his international team-mate to secure all three points for the Merseysiders.

Frank: We didn’t play a perfect game

Head coach Thomas Frank expressed his frustration at Brentford's 4-1 defeat to Liverpool.

“I think the boys were brilliant for 35 minutes,” he said. “We were the best team on the pitch and did so many things right.

“We pressed aggressively, we were great at winning it and going forward. We were very good in the transitions.

“We caused them problems, but unfortunately against these big teams we have to be almost perfect for 90 minutes and I don’t think we were.”

Ajer: We were punished by 'lethal' Liverpool

Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer has discussed the Bees’ defensive performance against a "lethal" Liverpool attack on Saturday lunchtime.

"It's very disappointing to stand here and talk about a 4-1 defeat, it doesn't matter who you play against, that's always disappointing,” said the defender.

"We started the game very well, very promising, and then they scored on our set-piece, which was disappointing - that happens very rarely.

“Then, after half-time, we come out to try and get back in the game but, when you play against Liverpool, they are lethal in attack.”

He added: "They probably underperformed for the first half an hour and we top performed but, against the top teams, you have to take advantage of that.

"We didn't do that today and we got punished in the second half."
