Neil Greig will once again be pounding the streets of London this April as he completes the 26.2 miles of the Virgin Money London Marathon to raise money for Havens Hospice. The Club's Head of Medical will be one of nearly 40,000 runners tackling the streets of London on Sunday 24 April in the name of sport and charity. Thanks to the fantastic support of players, staff and fans alike Neil raised nearly £6,000 for Havens Hospice when he completed the world famous route from Blackheath to The Mall in 3:23:15 last year and has set himself an ambitious target of £8,000 this time round.
Havens Hospice is a charity that that provides respite and care for adults and children at the end of their lives. When a family has been told that there's no cure for their loved one's illness, Havens Hospices can help. The charity can make the journey as comfortable as possible, controlling pain and medication, offering respite and caring for adults and children at the end of their lives. They offer free specialist care - for as long as is needed - within the home and at two hospices. Haven Hospices is not part of the NHS and receives limited government funding. The hospices can only exist because of the support and generosity of the community.
"Supporting Havens Hospices' is a cause that has become very dear to me since I became involved last year," said Neil. "I've seen at close hand the work being delivered to some very very sick children by the highly skilled staff at at the centre. It's humbling to see and makes me appreciate even more that my own daughter's good health cannot be taken for granted. The support offered to the families of the children is phenomenal and Havens need our continued support to ensure that this is always the case.
"Running London last year was a huge personal triumph for me. It was my first marathon and I'm not a natural runner, so the training wasn't without it's injuries. To complete the run and do it in a respectable time was a very satisfying. Also, everyone associated with Brentford was so supportive: players, staff and fans all dug deep with sponsorship which I'll always be grateful for. Already this year, the players have been setting me incentive based sponsorships which will keep me striving to improve.
"I'd like to beat last year £6000 if I can, therefore any support that Brentford fans would like to offer to this hugely important cause would be gratefully received."
