Herbert Cock (1898); 1 appearance, 0 goals

Herbert was the youngest of three footballing brothers. His elder siblings Jack and Donald both guested for the Club during the First World War while Herbert joined in January 1921 during our first season in league football. The forward’s only appearance came at Home Park in March as we were beaten 1-0 by Plymouth Argyle. At the end of the season he left, joining Queens Park Rangers and then Arsenal but failed to play a game for either.

Sam Ward (1906); 7 appearances, 0 goals

Scottish centre-back Ward joined from Morton in 1927 as one of Harry Curtis’ first signings as manager. The 21-year-old played just seven times during the second half of the season and never played another professional game after leaving in the summer of 1928.

Gordon Neilson (1947); 104 appearances, 15 goals

Neilson’s arrival in the autumn of 1968 raised eyebrows given our financial state and the £10,000 splashed out to secure his services from Arsenal. He started to repay some of that with a goal on his third appearance in a 3-2 win over Swansea City. Neilson ended his debut season with six goals in 29 games as we finished a creditable 11th. He played a career high 39 times, scoring three goals, the following campaign with 23 appearances and four goals coming in 1970/71. Neilson, pictured bottom left above with the 1971/72 promotion-winning side, had a successful end to his time in West London with a Division Four promotion at the end of the 1971/72 campaign, a campaign which saw him score twice in 13 appearances.
