Brentford B play their final match in the Atlantic Cup on Thursday evening as they come up against Swedish outfit Halmstads BK in a 7pm kick-off.

Neil MacFarlane’s side face former Allsvenskan champions at the Estádio Algarve as they round off their journey in the mid-season competition.

In opposition

The young Bees will take on a Halmstads BK side who await the beginning of the 2023 Allsvenskan campaign which gets underway in March, following their promotion from the Swedish second division last year. The club, who in recent years have produced world-class talent, most notably Freddie Ljungberg coming through the ranks, totalled 56 points from 30 games to ensure their position back in the Swedish topflight. Halmstads are yet to pick up a point in this season’s Atlantic Cup losing to Norwegian side Viking FK and most recently Danish club Brondby IF.

Neil MacFarlane’s thoughts

After the B team picked up their first point in the competition in the draw to AIK Fotboll on Monday night, head coach Neil MacFarlane was full of praise for his side. He said: “The Atlantic Cup has been a great platform for these young players, we’ve got one more game to go and hopefully we can finish on another positive result. We want to keep giving the team the experiences they need to develop; it’s been a terrific effort so far for our players, over the previous two games they have been excellent and I’m sure we’ll go again against Halmstads and finish this competition properly.”

Last time we met

Our B team faced Halmstads last season in the Atlantic Cup. The Swedish side ran out narrow winners in Albufeira despite an early goal from Nathan Young-Coombes.

An Alex Gilbert injury-time equaliser ensured the young Bees gained a point in their last outing against AIK Fotboll, however, the Swedish side won the decisive penalty shootout 5-4 leaving with two points from the match.
