Brentford B were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Sky Bet League Two side AFC Wimbledon at Jersey Road in a behind closed doors fixture on Tuesday afternoon.
It was a 78th minute strike from Quaine Bartley which won it for the Dons in a tight encounter with the young Bees often frustrated by a resolute Wimbledon back line.
The match was four minutes old before Wimbledon fashioned their first opening, and it came when Kwaku Frimpong struck from distance, but the effort failed to trouble Roco Rees in the Brentford goal as it sailed over.
On 12 minutes Brentford had arguably their best chance of the game as Tristan Crama headed the ball back across goal following a corner, and as Luka Racic challenged in the area, the ball found its way to Yehor Yarmoliuk, whose powerful drive was brilliantly stopped by the Wimbledon keeper.
Just after the 20-minute mark Yarmoliuk was involved again as he played a wonderful first time flick into the right-hand channel for the Trialist full back to drive down the wing. The ball was delivered low into the box towards Alex Gilbert but once again the keeper was out quickly to make the block.
Bartley then had his first attempt on 24 minutes as he shot over at the far post following a Wimbledon cross from the right and the final real action of the half saw Kyreece Lisbie have his head in his hands after he shot narrowly wide following a quick Brentford free-kick which almost caught out the Dons going into the break.
The second half didn’t see too much action in terms of chances, and it took until 68 minutes for another real opportunity to occur. The opening goal almost came in impressive fashion when a misplaced Wimbledon pass found its way to Gilbert who was a fair distance from goal. He went for the spectacular to try and catch Nathan Broome off his line, but the chipped effort was just over the goal.
A few moments later there was a chance down the other end as Rees was called into action as he made a save from close range to deny Marcel Campbell’s powerful drive. The goal then came from Bartley as he had a shot which Rees initially saved but the Wimbledon man was able to pounce as the Brentford keeper was unable to hold the ball as the League Two side went ahead through a close range follow up effort.
Two minutes from time Brentford then had a goal ruled out for offside. After a sustained period of pressure, Yarmoliuk managed to keep the ball alive and chip into the path of Gilbert whose goal was ruled out having strayed just offside. In stoppage time, the Bees were then denied by Broome once again as Gilbert struck a sumptuous free-kick from the edge of the box which was aimed for the top corner, but credit to the Wimbledon keeper who kept the effort out.
