Brentford B rounded off their stay in Wales with a pre-season friendly fixture against Swansea City's Under-21s on Saturday morning. Despite goals from one of the Trialists as well as an Alex Gilbert penalty, it was Swansea who claimed the 4-2 win.
The Swans had a side featuring first team player Ben Cabango as well as Jordan Garrick and forward player Kyle Joseph, among a crop of their Under-21 side.
On the final day of their stay in Wales where the young group have been put through their paces over the course of the week, the opportunity to build match sharpness presented itself at the Vale as Swansea made the short trip to the resort. The side shaped up in a similar way to their two previous pre-season games with the opportunity for Trialists to impress as four were named in the starting line-up. There was also a first start for Yehor Yarmoliuk since he arrived at the Club whilst Val Adedokun got his first significant minutes of pre-season. Alex Gilbert once again captained the side in South Wales as he put in another accomplished display.
A chance for Swansea fell early as they managed to get in behind down the right. A low cross was shot towards goal at the far post but forced Roco Rees into a good block along with one of the Trialist defenders.
On 12 minutes it was The Swans who went ahead as Joseph found the net with a composed finish. After winning the ball back on the right the ball was crossed into the path of the Swansea forward, who controlled well, before curling with his right foot past Rees from centre of the box.
On 22 minutes Swansea had another attempt at goal when Jordan Garrick crossed for Joseph. The ball was then laid out to the edge of the box for Ben Lloyd, who saw his powerful effort saved by Rees with his feet. They doubled their lead just a couple of minutes later, though, as work down the left saw them cross low for Joel Cotterill to slot in low.
It took The Bees around a minute or so to pull one back and make it 2-1, though, and it came when good work from Kyreece Lisbie saw him win the ball back high before it was squared into the path of the Trialist striker, who powered home into an empty goal as the keeper rushed back but couldn't make the save.
On the half hour mark the Bees had another chance again as a free-kick was awarded on the edge of the box after a good run from Yarmoliuk which saw him brought down. Gilbert stepped up to take on the effort but for a strong block by the Swansea wall.
A few minutes before the break Brentford had another free-kick, this time from a wide position and it was Gilbert who whipped the ball across goal and it met the head of Nico Jones, but the central defender was unable to keep his effort on target.
Swansea added another goal six minutes into the second period when Joseph grabbed another after he won the ball back high from one of the Trialists before slotting in past Rees to make it 3-1.
Just after the hour mark Brentford had a chance to pull another back from the penalty spot after good work from one of the Trialists who cut in front the left and was fouled. Gilbert then stepped up to take the spot kick with a composed finish into the bottom right-hand corner.
13 minutes from time The Bees had a good chance to level when Max Dickov combined with one of the Trialists to cross low. The striker Trialist then almost got his second of the game when he connected at the near post, but for a deflection which took the ball behind for a corner.
On 81 minutes The Swans got their fourth when Josh Thomas found the net. As Brentford pushed forward looking for the equaliser, a slip in defence allowed the Welsh side the chance to break as Thomas was played through and slotted past Rees to make it 4-2.
Brentford almost found a third goal a few minutes before the end as Gilbert stepped up to take another free-kick. This time it beat the wall but it ended up just the wrong side of the post as Swansea claimed the pre-season win.
